This series is very accessible for reluctant readers, beginning readers, ESOL students, or even "regular" readers in middle school or high school. One thing I like about the series is that they don't patronize the readers or boil it down to "see Spot run, see Paul Revere ride" simplicity. This book provides a thorough overview of the background, the event itself, and the aftermath. They discuss "taxation w/o representation" and the buildup of tensions between the Redcoats and the residents of Boston. Their discussion of the "massacre" itself (or "riot," if you prefer) avoid simplistic descriptions that praise the freedom-loving colonists and blame the brutal Redcoats. They discuss the agitation after the event by Samuel Adams but also discuss John Adams successful efforts to get the Redcoats acquitted. It concludes with a brief account of the war's outbreak at Lexington.Middle school and high school ESOL students often complain that the books they're given to read are "baby stories." It's a challenge to adapt and simplify the language without simplifying the content. The editors of this series do a good job of avoiding that trap.
My fourth grade son loves to read books on the level of Harry Potter, but he misses the colorful earlier books of Geronimo Stilton. During a trip to Boston we bought Graphic Library books The Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea Party, and Paul Revere's Ride and found he couldn't put them down. He read each at least three times and now wants to share them with his classmates. The graphic format brings the facts of the American Revolution to life. These books are not comprehensive but are factually accurate, and should serve more as a jumping off point for building a love of history.
These books are very good at teaching English to my ESOL students while teaching them American History as well. This book deals with the Boston Massacre and contains details that I wasn't aware of. Recommended.
My kids love this fun graphic novel series. I have purchased a few and they always ask for more when studying new events in History.
I am a teacher and my students absolutely love these books! I would give them 5 stars, but they are cheaply made and pages start falling out after only a small amount of use.
I purchased these for a teacher in my school district as requested. She has been very happy with them so far.
A fascinating read and recommend it as a good accessory to the collection!
Book was in excellent condition
