I'm all in favor of children having access to age-appropriate material about the Titanic, and I bought this copy of THE SINKING OF THE TITANIC (Graphic History) partly out of curiosity and partly because I myself like graphic novels. Although I appreciated the lively artwork, I was disappointed by a number of factual flaws I found in the text: -- Ship Captain Edward J. Smith is consistently portrayed in the graphic novel with a dark, salt-and-pepper beard. However, contemporaneous photographs of Smith show nothing other than a snow-white beard and mustache. -- Margaret Tobin ("Molly") Brown had indeed married a "highly successful" Colorado gold miner, but it was her husband's invention of a better way to extract gold from the mining process that made them rich and gave her entry to high society. It is highly unlikely that the wife of just any miner, even a miner of gold, would hobnob with the Astors, tour the Pyramids, and afford first-class transatlantic passage! Also, she was not given the nickname "Molly" until after her death in 1932. Close friends called her "Maggie." -- The dialog has ship's designer Thomas Andrews telling Captain Smith, "The iceberg has ripped many holes." This is a modern diagnosis based on post-1985 underwater examination of the Titanic's hull and metallurgic examination of some of its hand-hammered rivets. Anyone on the Titanic would have conceived of the iceberg as inflicting a continuous gash or scar, and went to their grave believing that. At one point, even the graphic novel says, "The iceberg ripped through the hull." -- This is a minor point, but Titanic's laden weight is given in the graphic novel as 45,000 metric tons, equivalent to 50,000 of the kind of tons we still use in the USA. In fact, White Star lines, Titanic's operator, estimated its "register weight" as 45,000 tons (those are pre-metric tons), but its displacement was an estimated 66,000 tons (see THE ROUGH GUIDE TO THE TITANIC, p. 14).There are a number of novels about the Titanic written specifically for children, and in my opinion a child of seven, eight or nine would have a better go with one of them. One particularly popular kids' novel is called I SURVIVED THE TITANIC, 1912 by Lauren Tarshis. Pre-ads could probably handle the go-to beginners' work on the diaster, Walter Lord's 1955 A NIGHT TO REMEMBER.

The Canadian Titanic Society consulted in the production of this children's book and endorse it to be historically accurate and to be very educational. This book as been done to a high quality standard and I recommend it highly!

My son isn't the best reader, but this book combines the 2 things that he seems to enjoy reading, disasters and comics. A fairly accurate history is written in an easier to read format.

This is part of Capstone's Graphic Library. I use these books to teach my ESOL students to read English and American History. The Titanic story may not be an essential turning point in American History but students find it a very exciting story. I do too! It brings history to life for these kids and much better than the old black and white graphic novels that teachers had to deal with. Very nice!

I teach a college course related to teaching of reading. I used these books to do a lesson on leveled readers and focus units to demonstrate the variety of materials that are available if one is willing to look. I found this book to be very informative, based in fact, high interest level, and able to interest hesitant readers.

Awesome book on an awesome subject. My son is a beginning reader and this was the right mix of great topic plus low enough lexile score that he could read it with only a little assistance.

Really like this book. I like how it helps teach history in a visual, engaging way. Bright colors, clear font. I got it for a student who is all about the Titanic.

Love the fact the story of the titanic tragedy is told in the graphic novel format. The book arrived as expected.
