My 1st grade / 6.5 year old daughter LOVES Elephant and Piggie books. They are by far her favorite, and when this one arrived in the mail, she literally screamed with joy and excitement. She rushed off to her room to read it immediately. My 9 year old was jealous, and got a turn reading it after her little sister was finished.The little one isn't reading a lot by herself yet, but she will try harder to read the E&P books than with any other book, ever. And the great part is that she can usually figure out most of the words, and there are only a few words in each book that I will have to tell her what they are. The color coded speech boxes really help kids figure out who is speaking as well (as if the drawings don't do that well enough--they DO!). The pictures are also cute and funny, so kids get and stay engaged.I would definitely recommend these books for kids 3-10. There is enough repetition that kids feel confident about reading it, but not so much that it feels babyish. In fact, the repetition is quite artful and I think it encourages kids to keep trying without being patronizing. If you are hoping your child will read it themselves, if they know the list of 100 sight words, or can sound out most 3-4 letter words, they will at least be able to "help" read and may be able to read the majority of the book. My 6 year old and I like to each be one of the characters (I'm usually Gerald).
I've been reading Elephant and Piggie books to my 6 year old for several years now, and we both love them. "We're in a Book" was the first, and we were both hooked after that. They're as much fun to read as they are for the children to listen to. "I'm a Frog" is a really strong entry. I like it more than the most recent two, "Let's Go For a Drive", and "A Big Kid Took My Ball"; Those were okay, but this one is classic.
We adore Elephant and Piggie! These books are fun for adults to read aloud and for children to listen to. My kids are 3 and 6, and both of them love these stories. There is subtle humor that adults can relate to, as well as pure knee-slapping comedy that children want to hear over and over again. In my opinion, "I'm a Frog!" is one of the best Elephant and Piggie books.
My daughter has almost every book in the series, and this one is by far the funniest and most entertaining. Love Mo Willems!
The kids love it - and you know kids these days need to be reminded to use their imaginations, which this does. The newer Elephant and Piggie books have not wowed me, so I was not expecting much, but this has quickly become one of my favorite Elephant Piggie Books.
Mo Willems has added another fabulous book to the Gerald and Piggy series. This one is about pretending and appropriate for all ages. The author creates a great story through narrative and pictures.
My son (age 9) struggles with reading, but he loves reading this book and others in the series. He loves the word bubble because it's like reading a comic book. He reads Gerald's part and I read Piggy's. The books are so funny. I don't mind reading them over-and-over with him. The artwork is simple and clean, and yet so expressive.
This is my first exposure to Mo Willems. After purchasing the first I purchased several others as small gifts for children of my friends during the holidays. Perfect for 1-4 year age range. (the age when they start to argue with adults "1-18?) Colorful pictures humorous. Would be great fun for bed time. It would get the need to argue out of them before they decide they don't want to go to bed. I always tried the distract and conquer theory raising my children. I believe his books would have been a great weapon. lol
