Grammy got this for my kids and they LOVE it. The story is goofy, which appeals to my preschooler and first grader both. They love looking for Pete on the end papers, and at the website. Talk about fun! The rhymes are great for my first grade reader, and fun to listen to also. The colourful pictures and meter of the text hold my one year old's attention as well. A great all around family book!
I absoultely love this book. I am asked repeatedly to read this book to my 3 children ages 8, 5, and 18 months. They really enjoy the rhymes and the illustrations. As a rather finicky mom, I can whole heartedly recommend this book!! It is so fun to read.
A Plump and Perky Turkey has a pleasingly poetic rhyme. This book is a blast to read aloud, but a little tricky the first time around. "They make turkeys out of spuds, and out of clay and out of rope. They made turkeys out of oatmeal, and out of paper, out of soap." That portion is my son's favorite. It's repeated three times in the story, but he laughs every time. I'm not sure if it's the words that amuse him so, or the illustrations. The pages are soaked in oranges, browns, and golden tones, thus one certainly gets the idea that autumn is in the air. Shelly has a cartoonish style, in that the images are accentuated with thick, dark lines. The artwork is humorous, and rich in details. The book doesn't offer an age recommendation, but I'd say it's geared to children 3 to 7-years.
The story itself is great. HOWEVER, this is a TINY book (paperback version) and if you're using it as a read aloud, it's nearly impossible to read the TINY type and show a classroom pictures. I'd say the font type, which makes it even more difficult to read, is maybe 9 point. The kids loved the story, but we were all disappointed in how tiny the pictures and text were,
This is a charming Thanksgiving story about a town that tries to trick a turkey into becoming their dinner. It is well written and in verse. So, it is fun for reading aloud. Plus, it has a surprise ending! The illustrations are cheerful and funny, too. It is a nice change of pace from the many books about "what we are thankful for" and the pilgrims (though both are important topics) and will surely make the kids smile.
The book itself is cute enough. The illustrations are good and the story is fun. However, the Kindle version is very poorly implemented. The text boxes cut off text in places and tapping to expand them only shows part of the text. The font is horrible. This is true on both my Kindle Fire HD and my Samsung Galaxy S5.
This witty, rhyming picture book is perfect for Thanksgiving! The people of Squawk Valley want a turkey to eat for Thanksgiving, so they hold a turkey art contest. Their plan is foiled by the clever and tricky turkey. It is such a cute book! I bought the Kindle version for my kids and we read it on Thanksgiving. If you missed out on this book that day, you will have to pay a little more, but it is still a bargain at $3.99. Definitely worth the money! The Illustrations: Loved the illustrations. The artwork was quirky and silly, just like the story. The cleverness of the turkey is beautifully rendered in these pictures.
We purchased this book more than 10 years ago and our youngest daughter (then 3) fell in love with this fun and silly story. We now read it every Thanksgiving. The kids (now teens) roll their eyes, but still giggle at my husband's voices. :D
