* It's always a cause for celebration when a new Elephant & Piggie is released!* The way Willems' deft illustrations convey exactly what the character is feeling, without the need for words, is really nothing short of genius.* In a few short pages, with spare prose, Willems has created a suspenseful story that will have you and your young reader hooked from start to finish.* Your young reader should be able to read it by themselves after only a few shared readings.* For all those pigeon fans out there, check out the end-papers (the inside, back cover of the books). Pigeon makes a guest appearance!======================================================In I Broke My Trunk, Piggie and Gerald take on their usual (hilarious) roles. Piggie, in all her exuberance, would like to know how Gerald hurt his trunk. Gerald, in his usual dramatic fashion, tells the story of how it happened. It involves hippos, rhinos and a large piano. It's a CRAZY story! And one that will have you and your young reader rolling around laughing. Mr. Willems just doesn't disappoint! It boggles the mind, just how many books can this genius produce? Next Elephant and Piggie to be released June 2011. Not soon enough.
I am a library aide at my daughter's elementary school and we have not been able to keep the piggy and elephant books on the shelves all year! The kids are constantly asking for them and fighting over who will be able to check them out. I bought three more books for my daughter to donate to the library for her birthday knowing how popular they have been. We read them out loud to all the classes before we put them on the shelves and the kids just love them! They are definitely laugh out loud, gut buster books! I highly recommend them!
I opened the box after the kids had gone to bed and was laughing out loud when I read the book... my husband had to come and see what I was laughing about! : ) My kids love all of his books - and I love reading them!
Please see my other reviews for Elephant and Piggie...I can't keep writing about the marvels of this series for young to not-so-young children every time a new one comes out and I order it. Though I don't actually read them unless my grandchildren are visiting, I enjoy reading the books almost as much as they enjoy listening or pretending to read them, too. Should mention that I had 34 years of experience teaching K-2 before retiring last year, so I know a great book when I see one!
My 4 year old finds these and most of the Elephant Piggie series hilarious! (So do mom and dad) It's the first series he can read on his own. It's the perfect length and word choice is fantastic. We have most of them now in the hardback format which definitely adds up cost wise, but if you can order through Scholastic, they have them at a much better price in paperback. Keep in mind the Scholastic paper stuff is truly that.... paper thin. So make sure your kids are gentle on their books. "I will take a Nap" is another favorite!
My oldest two sons were ages 4 and 2 when this book was first released. They loved the book then, and they still love it now, 2 years later. This book has been one of their favorites to read aloud. The text and illustrations are simple enough for preschool-age children to enjoy, but clever and witty enough to entertain grade-schoolers (and adults). I recently read I Broke My Trunk! to my son's 1st grade class and they loved it! They laughed out loud in all the right places and several of them asked me to bring more Elephant and Piggie books next time. It's a good thing we have a few more in our home library, specifically I Am Invited to a Party! and There Is a Bird on Your Head!
These books are fantastic for the young child who is learning to read. My son is past the "Bob's Book" level, and needed something a bit more challenging, and Mo Willems has created a series and characters that I think will be beloved years from now, that provide some good challenge for the beginner-to-intermediate (advance Pre-K, K, even grade 1) reader. I Broke My Trunk even makes adults smile.
Delightfully absurd. I realize that's sort of a stuffy description, but those are the words that sum up this book. It's funny, but not fart jokes or boogers funny (not that we can't all use a good fart joke or booger anecdote once in a while).I require that children's books entertain me since I'm going to have to read them over and over again. I'm a sucker for my nieces and nephews anyway, but my little English teacher heart goes pitter-patter when they ask if we can please read the book. Even if we just read it. Even if we read it twice yesterday. I'm all for literary spoiling. But, I'm also not into brain damage by repetitive boredom. So the fact that Elephant and Piggie crack me up every time makes their stories solid occupants of the bookshelf my tiny reading audience can reach. Yeah Mo Willems! Keep 'em coming.
