This is a favorite bedtime story that my 4 year old just adores. Ultimately it's about being happy with who you are and it teaches the lesson in a simple, fun to read story.
This is a great book that my 4 and 5 year old boys like having read to them. The illustrations are very fun and the cadence is just right for a fun read before bedtime. I also like that it addresses why PJ thought he wanted to be different but found that he liked being himself. The story is told straight forward and I think that is why my kids are able to understand the parable so well.
This book is so funny -- as the name of the characters reveal, the Funnybunnies have loads of adventures to which every child can relate.P.J. isn't happy with his looks. In fact, he despises his long ears and even rejects his cooked carrots at mealtime. He sets off to find his identity by trying out various families in the community. He isn't comfortable with the bears, the birds, the beavers, pigs, possums or moose. Ultimately, P.J. recognizes the merits of being a bunny after all.This uplifting tale is easy for first readers because of its repetition. Younger siblings will enjoy the brilliant illustrations. My toddler son received this book as a gift for his first birthday. It came highly recommended from a teen friend who had treasured it as a childhood favorite. We weren't disappointed. I am not sure if it is the language, simple illustrations, or the premise but he never tires of It's Not Easy Being a Bunny. Not only do we recommend this book, we have already purchased it for other first birthday gifts. We give it an unequivocal A+ rating.
I am really surprised by other parents' take-away from this book. I bought it off a recommendation from a friend and I can't say that I agree with my friend or the 5-star rating. I fear the message of "being happy with who you are" gets lost in all the insults PJ has for his neighbors. All those kind woodland creatures look so happy and welcoming to PJ who then insults their defining characteristics on his way out the door. Also, the beavers work too hard?! What kind of lesson is that? "Oh, don't associate with that type...they work too hard." I understand that PJ is obviously going through an identity crisis, but he seems awfully judgmental and not very grateful for the hospitality of his neighbors.The illustrations are pretty cute.
Read it at bedtime for a 4 year old boy. He asks for it often enough and he likes to fill in the blanks, so I read it that way. Very cute. I like books that I buy for children's home collection that they ask to have read to them time and time again.
This book has the typical story line of the main character not wanting to be who he is so tries to be a bunch of other things (or animals in this case). What's truly cute in this one is that he also tries to look like them. My little one's giggles over the pictures was well worth getting this one. I'm also hoping she might be reading it to me soon.
This is a darling story of a bunny who thinks he might be happier being something different, so he heads out into the world to try living with different animals. In the end he comes to realize that being a bunny is actually perfect for him. I have read this story over and over again and have never tired of reading it. I have given it as baby gifts so others can enjoy this read with their children.
