I ordered this book for my 9 year old son. He absolutely loves it. Since he has started reading Magic Tree House books his reading has drastically improved. I believe this book and the Magic Tree House books are a must have for this age group. These books help them learn history facts in a fun way.
A "gold standard" book I have used for many years in my classroom. Mary Pope Osborne knows just how to explain history to children, in a way that is interesting, intriguing, and age-appropriate. Her coverage of Pompeii in this book is especially well done, and I love how she deals with the tragedy with just the right amount of emphasis, but not too much, and then helps us learn how the Pompeiians/Romans lived through things we discovered in Pompeii.
We love all the research guides for MTH. They are written at a higher Lexile level than the stories but it makes them fun to read together. My 6 year old doesn't have the patience to read through a research guide the entire way through on her own but together it makes for a fun project...she gets to tell me about what happened in the story to Jack & Annie and together we learn some fun facts about whatever time/place the story was about.
I have a three and five year old girls and this is the best series going. It is appropriate for the Kindergardener and we have read every single book. Each book in the series is give or take 100 pages but it is a quick and easy read. In reading the books your kids not only get a great story but also pick up on a little history which can lead to some great discussions. I actually read the books with my ipad close by so I can google pictures of the things/places that Jack and Annie (the brother and sister in the books) visit or see. I would recommend these books for every parent/child. When I am done I will be donating the entire set to the local library. Regarding pricing, if your intent is to read the entire series look for don't buy the four book package or single books. There are set of 1-28 and I think there is a set that is everything published 1-48. As with most things, if you buy the whole set you save siginificant money!
Good for a 9 - 12 year old -- even older though designed for the young reader. I got an ancient Roman coin for my grandson & this book for facts related to the time. The 9 year old is less interested than the 11 year old, but he is interested in the coin & the fact that it is very old (1500 years).
I only wish I'd discovered this series of books sooner! These books are great supplements to teaching history to your kids. The Magic Tree House website even offers a few free activity pages to go with many of the books and in addition to the history study guide, we use the companion story books to really get "personal" with history.
It has been years since I read Vacation Under the Volcano with my daughter, but this non-fiction companion was a nice refresher for us to read with our Ancient History text book. Filled with tons of interesting facts, photos, illustrations, and chronological information about the rise and fall of the Roman Empire; elementary and junior high age students will love and benefit from.
My daughter enjoys the [AR] book but it's only readable in the landscape mode w/o font adjustment. My daughter has good eyesight so that's not as much of an issue for her but when I read through some of the pages of the book using the Paperwhite, I absolutely cannot read anything on the pages w/o zooming in quite a bit and shifting up/down/left/right.
