Bonyo Bonyo may seem like a strange name to many American children, but in Kenya it's common for people to have the same first and last names. And by the end of the book, the name becomes the last thing of any importance in the story.Bonyo grew up as a boy in a small farming village in Western Kenya. His family was loving but poor. There often wasn't enough food available and there was no medical help for miles around. When Bonyo was nine, his beloved infant sister died of an illness that was in all likelihood treatable had the family had access to medical care. This tragedy sparked in Bonyo a desire to become a doctor and prevent future tragedies. But in order to fulfill his dream, Bonyo faces many obstacles. His family runs out of money to sent him to school, so he has to walk for two days to go to a school which he can attend for free. He has to cross a deep river along the way. Once at his destination, he has to find a local market woman and wait for her to finish her day's selling. He has no shoes. He must sleep on the floor. But once Bonyo gets to school, he thrives. His grades get him into a Catholic boarding school where he gets enough to eat for the first time in his life. He eventually gets into a school in Texas and has to raise the money to fly there. He arrives with a few clothes, a blanket and $11.00. Bonyo continues to succeed in school and eventually goes on to become Dr. Bonyo. He uses the money he earns from his practice in Ohio to fulfill his dream of setting up a medical clinic in his village to give back to those who helped him early on.The story is certainly inspiring, but I'm not sure how most young kids will react to it. I don't know that it's a book that many kids will be drawn to or want repeated many times.
