What a great book for a Presidential Election year! This clearly written book is targeted for young people and children, but is useful for ANYONE wondering about our Electoral system for selecting our President. What is it? Why is it? How does it work? What are its advantages? Is it outmoded? (NO!)The book explains why the Founders distrusted a pure democracy, why the smaller states wanted protections from the tyranny of the larger states, and how the interests of everyone, and the safety of election results are enhanced through the Electoral College. The book has lots of illustrations, but probably the nicest feature for children are the “Emma’s Corner” boxes where the author’s daughter, Emma, offers a clear eyed example to help explain the principle being explained. There are also “Founder’s Corners” where quotes are provided from our Founders about the principles they were embodying in the government they created and why.The back of the book has a nice glossary to explain terms the reader might not be familiar with. There is also a section of notes and sources for further reading to help you go deeper than this book on subjects discussed that might interest you related to the Electoral process. This is terrific!STRONGLY recommended. I bought three copies for my older grandkids (and their parents, I suspect, will get more clear about this subject as they read this with their kids).Reviewed by Craig Matteson, Saline, MI
The Electoral College is misunderstood by many. “We Elect a President: The Story of Our Electoral College”, although written for children, clearly explains the Electoral College and other important aspects of the structure of our government to all. Emma's Corner (the author’s fourth-grade daughter's contribution) and The Founders' Corner are wonderful additions! The book is beautiful. I love the illustrations by Kate E. Cooper and the font selection for the print. This book is a must for all students - young and old. Thank you , Tara Ross, for once again teaching us more about America!
I am embarrassed to say that I never completely understood the Electoral College system, and certainly didn't understand how beneficial the system is to our country's presidential election process. First, I read Tara Ross's "Enlightened Democracy" (for adults), wishing I had been taught the whys and hows as a child. Then, voila! Here comes a book written by the same author for children! I home school my 11-year-old twins, and this book will be an excellent supplement to our government studies leading up to the election. The author does a wonderful job explaining what might be considered a complex issue to kids, providing examples on a child's level. The author's daughter also contributed to the book, offering explanations that her fellow kids can easily understand! And the illustrations are very cute and colorful. Sometimes non-fiction books for kids can be so busy and cluttered within the text, but this book is very clean and simple in appearance - making it much less intimidating and much more pleasing to read. I think kids will enjoy this light introduction to the Electoral College - and their parents will be grateful for a brushing-up on this important (and timely) topic.
Our granddaughter will love it!
