Scratch for Kids goes much deeper into the art editor than any other Scratch book. Breen does an excellent job showing how to build up sprites and backgrounds from simple elements, and how to animate them. There is no better explanation of the relative merits of vector and bitmap modes. The book is a superior guide to Scratch animation, and how to add sound and other media elements to create entertaining games. Highly recommended even for experienced Scratchers!
The book is very well written, I am impressed so far about how professionally done this book is. I would probably buy this book for a child who has some experience in scratch, but it is probably good even if they do not.
My 11-year old daughter does not like to read, and I bought this book for her as a motivation to read something useful. Plan worked!! She dove right in! She said you can do "fun stuff" right away!
I have a child just about to enter school, and I am really excited for him to be old enough to work with this book! The writing is jocular and engaging, and moves fast, so that it's enjoyable just reading through the book. It's very fast to get you up and running with working project---you'll have a working Flappy Bird clone by the end of the first chapter. At the same time, the style is extremely inviting and encouraging. It does a great job of making the reader feel confident in creating his or her own work.The book is divided into three parts, on design, animation, and (game) development. The level of detail is substantial. I was impressed to see details about animation (not even about Scratch per se) such as how to make a realistic walking animation, and how to get a character's mouth to be in synch with spoken words.The author himself notes up front, with characteristic humor, that thanks to the Web, you don't need to buy a book to learn Scratch. But this book would be a really fun way to do it. The encouraging style would help any student feel able to do amazing things. And the humor and level of detail mean there's a lot even for the most confident student. I recommend it!
If you or your colleagues are working with Scratch you will love this book by Derek Breen. Actually if you are not using Scratch you will want to after looking at the book. Scratch for Kids for Dummies is written from a graphic designer's point ofview. It is full of insights and techniques for creating games, players, and backgrounds.

What a great way to elevate Scratch to an even better learning tool for kids! It's clear, and I like the way that the chapters build the knowledge. My son has made this a well-read favorite!
