So, a while ago, I entered an ARC contest solely because I thought the prize was a book some of my husband's students might like, so I figured I could review it and then add it to the box of goodies he keeps in his classroom as rewards his students can select for doing great work or making excellent contributions to the class. To be honest, I seriously doubted it would be anywhere NEAR my alley. I was surprised to learn this afternoon--in the form of a manila envelope in my mailbox--that I'd actually won the drawing for a copy of Secret Coders: Get With The Program, a graphic novel which appears to be aimed at middle and high school audiences, and is about a group of kids who learn computer coding languages. I can hear you now, "Uh huh....?" I know, I know, I sounded the same way a mere few hours ago! I was even more dubious when I realized that I recognized Gene Luen Yang's name from American Born Chinese, a graphic novel I found little to no redeeming value or entertainment in whatsoever only a few weeks ago. But, like a diligent (and mildly curious) book reviewer, I pressed onward....and I'm glad I did! Because, despite the front cover illustration (which I found moderately off-putting, I must say), I found the back cover illustration simply marvelous and the back cover text intriguing. Then, I opened the book, and my adventure began. The whole volume clocks in at just under 100 pages, which, in graphic novel terms, means it translated into about a 20-minute time commitment for me.
