This is our first Kate Beaton book and I'm mostly impressed. I loved the fact that Princess Pinecone wants to be a proper warrior, and the fact that she gets a fat, flatulent pony instead is very cute and well told. I too once coveted a gift (an EZ Bake Oven) that I didn't get, and as a knitter I can sympathize with how tired Princess Pinecone is with quirky, handmade sweaters. That both kinds of "unwanted" gifts come in handy at the climax of the great warrior contest is a good lesson for kids not to judge a gift horse in the mouth (every pun intended). My only gripe is that the female warriors are almost exclusively drawn as scantily clad warrior nymphs and that's a tired cliche. Still, I think my niece will love it, and I hope she grows to view all the crocheted and knitted gifts I send her way are made with love, and might possibly come in handy someday. You never know.
I purchased this book as a treat for when my niece comes to visit, and I'm pretty satisfied with it.I adore "Hark! A Vagrant" (Ms. Beaton's web comic) and decided that this would be a great way of showing her how much I appreciate her work. All in all, I enjoy the book (my niece hasn't come to stay, yet). The illustrations are excellent, and Princess Pinecone is a strong character, in the vein of Merida from the movie "Brave", rather than the typical 'pink princess who needs to be saved' trope. My only quibble - and this more because I fear what my sister will say if my niece tells her - is the VERY minimal "potty humor": there are a few jokes about farts. And the only reason the fart jokes bug me is because we've had a heck of a time trying to teach my niece that "potty humor" is often not appropriate. If you're okay with a couple of jokes about flatulence, though, then I HIGHLY recommend it! I can't wait to share it with my niece!
I bought this for my 4-year-old nephew, and he LOVED it! He's asked me to read it for him multiple times over the past couple of days. He's mostly been exposed to media that's "for boys" at this point in his life, so I was happy to see him enjoying a fun and heartwarming story about a little girl. Beaton's writing here is both touching and funny, and her illustrations are vivid and fun to look at.
In a house where little boys love fart jokes, The Princess and the Pony was a huge hit. The boys love her drawings and think that the pony farting is hysterical. Overall, a big hit with them. It's also a pretty big hit with me! I think that the book sends a great message about what it means to be a multifaceted person and that boys can like cute things too.
Very cute and engaging. My daughters LOVE princesses (and a little potty humor) and I love that this princess is a warrior. Overall, this book is well written, the illustrations adorable, and I would recommend this book.
Cute story for my littlest sister who is turning 8. I watched a "read-along" on YouTube that took about 8 minutes.Tells the tale of this little princess warrior who only gets cozy sweaters for her birthday, but this year she wants a horse fit for a warrior only to get a derpy roly poly pony. At this great warrior battle the princess shows up with her pony and suddenly everyone turns to goo over this itty bitty pony. Turns out the big broodish, burly warriors all want to have cutesy, cuddly sweaters and ponies too. And the little pony is so overwhelmingly happy that he poots. To me, it was a nice little story of being grateful and appreciative for what you are given.
Such a funny, adorable story! I've seen this pony in Kate Beaton's Hark! A Vagrant book. (not for kids)I don't know which I love best; her story-telling style or the illustrations. Both are equally enjoyable and my 5 year old loves this funny book. Well... she mostly loves the farty pony, and I'm required to make a "fart" noise with my mouth whenever the pudgy pony has its tongue sticking out (which is every other page)Now... she wants a short, round, pudgy rollie pony too!
My whole family adores this book, and my four-year old wants to read it every day. Isn't it great when they get obsessed with a book that the grown-ups love too? As usual, Kate Beaton creates a charmingly askew, wildly creative world which is amusing and safe for my skittish kid (don't worry, the war is fought with spitballs. And squareballs.) This book is full of beautifully detailed, hilarious drawings. And it is effortlessly progressive and generous. It's an integral, and joyful, part of the book that Princess Pinecone is simultaneously a fierce warrior and a cute little girl. And the story showcases warriors of all races and body types, which adds to the book's delightfully odd imagery. I didn't think I could love Kate Beaton any more after following her webcomics for years--but now I know that she is a genius children's author. I hope she will write many more.
