Billy was a little boy who "loved horses more than anything else in the world." Imagine how happy he was when he got his very own pony for his birthday! From that day on, Billy was seldom seen without his new friend, Blaze. Riding through fields and woods, Billy and Blaze learned to trust and understand one another -- and to jump over fences and fallen trees with ease. They were a great team, but were they good enough to win the gleaming silver cup at the Mason Horse Show? This is the first book in the classic Billy and Blaze series. Sensitive drawings and easy-to-read words capture the warmth and gentle understanding between a boy and his horse.

Back in the 30's when I was a little girl horses were my passion. I read every book I could find about them. Then I discovered C. W. Anderson's Billy and Blaze books at our local library. I read and reread them and studied Anderson's drawings of Blaze. They were my absolute favorite books of all time. Many times over the years I have mentioned these books to my daughter and granddaughter (both horse people, too). Then one day I took a chance and went to and typed in a title. To my amazement up came the list of Billy and Blaze books I so cherished; I couldn't believe they were still in print. I immediately ordered the first five titles and intend to finish out the ones you have available. I was a little surprised to see how short the stories are, but the pictures are the same. Now at 78 years old I still love these little books that gave me such joy when I was young.I realize this is not exactly a review, it is a testimony of the love of a little girl for some books that she never forgot.Phyllis Graff

I read these books as a little kid... The illustrations are incredibly beautiful and lifelike, and the stories are equally enjoyable. Billy and Blaze's adventures would capture the heart and mind of any child -- or even adult! - with their emotional strength and superb literary quality. I can't recommend these books highly enough... every one of them.

I grew up reading the entire series of the Blaze books by C.W. Anderson and they have become favorites of my children. Billy loves his pony, and his pony loves him. There is a mutual respect that only love can inspire. Apart from the story, Anderson is a consumate illustrator.

All of the Billy & Blaze stories were among my favorites as a child; I'm so glad they are available again. The illustrations alone make these stories classic children's literature!

These boys have always loved books and can sit for as long as my voice continues so lots of books win the 5 stars with them but as they grow older it becomes more and more difficult to find stories that interest and are suitable for the age span. This series should get 6 stars because when I say, "How about a Billy and Blaze book?" the response from both is an excited "YESSS" The stories have just enough suspense without being scary and the relationship between the boy and his pony, his parents, friends and other adults he encounters models behavior we can all be proud to claim. Buy the first and you'll be hooked.

Billy is a young boy who "loved horses more than anything else in the world." He learns how to ride using some neighbor farmer's work horse and pretending that it is a prancing pony. One day he gets his very own beautiful bay pony for his birthday and names it Blaze because of the white streak down its face. Billy and Blaze go riding through the fields and woods. Billy rescues a dog from a trap, names it Rex and, since the owner could not be found, keeps it for a pet. Billy and Blaze learn to jump over fences and fallen trees with ease, but are they good enough to win the gleaming silver cup at the Mason Horse Show? This charming story is the first book in the classic Billy and Blaze series. Author and illustrator Clarence William Anderson (1891-1971) is best-known for his "Billy and Blaze" books which revolve around proper care of the horse while teaching a valuable lesson. All of the tales which Anderson wrote were based on true events or people that he knew--only the plots were fictitious. The Billy and Blaze stories are enjoyable, and the lively black and white illustrations are incredibly beautiful and realistic. There are a total of eleven books about Billy and his horse. Unfortunately, not all of them are in print. Aladdin publishes a set that includes eight of them. With their simple but exciting text and emphasis on kind treatment to animals, they would make excellent early readers for children in second to fourth grades.

My 7 yo son loves the Billy and Blaze series. This series is an excellent one for boys. Even if you don't think they have an interest in horses. There is great adventure, like only a boy could imagine. And the stories are not so inane that the parents reading them cry for mercy. ;-)I recommend it and my son highly recommends it.

This entire series is a treasure. Aside from the detailed line drawings that bring the story to life, there is actually quite a good plot. The tales encourage young folk to be responsible for their pets - even if the pet is not a horse. Enjoyable reading for ages 4 - 6.
