Commander Toad is a delight. He's "bold and bright", though not quite as bright as he thinks. His crew (an amalgam of loose takes on Star Wars and Star Trek characters) puts up with his prideful ways, because he is, after all, a good leader. Together with his mixed-gender crew he gets into and out of a wonderful series of scrapes. This book is the first in the series.Jane Yolen writes for kids. For example, when Commander and crew are threatened by a sea monster who makes it clear that they're about to be lunch, I asked my 4-year old what he thought would happen."Shoot him with a ray gun," he answered."I don't know," I said. "I think that they'll find out that the monster's just lonely, and they'll make friends."Turn the page, and BAM! Lt. Lily, Toad's female weapons master, is blasting away (to no effect). Thanks, Jane. Only you could make a story about a bunch of space-explorer frogs be true-to-life.Jane Yolen also writes for the adults who read books to their kids. There's nearly a pun a page, and the Commander's ludicrous solutions to problems have a germ of genius unrestrained by the laws of physics that will have you shaking your head over his cleverness.Buy this book, or regret the lost opportunity.
My son (who is entering second grade) read this book to me. It is at his reading level (early second grade), but the text did not seem to interest him. It is hard to say why not. The text was relatively clever and the pictures were well-drawn. He likes Frog and Toad much more (as do I).
I’ve decided I need to reread all the Commander Toad books this year. Research to find the best to give my niece and nephew for Christmas, or at least that’s the excuse I’m using. I went back to the very first one with Commander Toad in Space, which is very fun book.Commander Toad and his crew on the Star Warts are always looking for strange new planets to explore. They’ve just found one that appears to be made up completely of water, so they take a floating lily pad with them so they can land on the surface. However, they quickly discover they are not alone on the planet. Who or what at else is there? Will they be able to escape? It’s been so long since I read the books that I didn’t remember anything about this book before I sat down to reread it. I was very pleasantly surprised at just how much fun it was. The plot was decent and moved along at a good pace. It helped that the characters were introduced quickly at the beginning of the book. The illustrations by Bruce Degen are delightful and really help tell the story.Of course, the jokes that spoof science fiction, specifically Star Wars and Star Trek are numerous and add to the fun. I’m sure I missed many of them as a kid, but as an adult I got them and really enjoyed them. There are also some puns that I greatly enjoyed. These books are categorized as Easy Readers, and I agree with that. The short sentences are a bit choppy, but that’s a minor complaint and will be perfect for young readers. More importantly, the vocabulary is simple enough for young readers to read. A few words, mainly the characters’ names, might cause the reader to need some help from an adult, but that challenge will be good for them.I’m glad I remembered these books because they are fun. If you’ve missed them, pick up Commander Toad in Space.
This was one of the first science fiction books I ever read to my children. My eldest is in college now, and I asked if she remembered the series. She did! In much greater detail than I would have imagined. If you love science fiction and would like to pass that love on to your children, I recommend this series very highly. If you don't, they are still fabulous books.Reasons I read this series to my kids:#1 - It gave me an excuse to read them!#2 - The name of the ship is Star Warts.#3 - Its mission: to find new worlds, to explore old galaxies, to bring a little bit of Earth out to the alien stars.#4 - Puns!
It's the best Commander Toad book! I like them all. They all are great. The monster in this one was cool.
My son loved this book 20 years ago, so I bought it for my grandson and he loves it as well. Great for beginner readers.
My son absolutely loves these books as I read them aloud and the clear text will be easy for him to read later.
