"Thunderous Applause", for Freddy the Frogcaster!!A delightfully entertaining book by Janice Dean, beautifully illustrated by Russ Cox; tells the story of Freddy the Frogcaster's fascination with weather and the tools used to predict it. The story follows Freddy as a tadpole, through school days, and how he learns about weather and uses his knowledge to help his friends and the townspeople prepare for important events that could be affected by the weather. His forecasts saves the town picnic plans, and he becomes a local hero. The easy to understand explanations of weather forecasting are very informative for children and adults alike. Kudos Janice, for an excellent first book! Our family loved your book and sincerely hope there will be another in the future.
Freddy the Frogcaster entertains while also teaching kids to love learning. Meteorologist Janice Dean combines her weather expertise with Russ Cox's engaging, humorous illustrations for a story that's irresistible to both child and parent. The text is inspiring and fun to read aloud. Freddy is a froggy who has loved weather since he was a baby. He studies weather patterns and shares them at show-and-tell and everywhere else he can. When the local TV meteorologist fails to do her job well, the town turns to Freddy. This little guy saves the day just in time for the big Leapfrog Picnic.Kids are inspired to study up on their own areas of interest. For those fascinated by Freddy's favorite field, there are several pages of meteorological definitions and explanations at the end of the book.My 7-year-old nephew loves it, and so does my 22-month-old son. Lately it's the only book he's grabbing from the bookshelf. I think younger kids are drawn in by the pictures, while older ones love that it's the little guy to the rescue.
What a great first book by Janice Dean "The Weather Machine"! Freddy the Frogcaster is a delightful story of a young frog named Freddy who just loves to learn about and forecast the weather. Janice does a great job of telling a cute story while teaching youngsters about the weather. Children will love how Freddy gains his knowledge about forecasting the weather and how he uses that knowledge to save the day for the town's picnic. Mixed in with the story are meteorological terms that children will learn as they read. The glossary in the back is very informative to help explain the words in depth. The cast of characters in the book will make you smile: Sally Croaker, meteorologist for the Frog News Network and Mrs. Fibian, Freddy's teacher are two of my favorites. Not only is the story cute and humorous, it also teaches a lesson. Freddy helped the mayor and the town by warning of nasty weather that could disrupt the town's picnic and put the frogs in danger. What I liked is how the mayor trusted Freddy, even though he's a young frog. There are great lessons there. The illustrations are colorful and humorous and will keep a child's attention. With an entertaining story and wonderful illustrations, this is a must have book for children. Adults will enjoy it, too, as I have!
Read it to my son and he said it was really cool ! We went back and discussed a few things about what happened in the story and he seemed inquisitive about how weather is forecasted. There's a glossary at the end of the book with weather terms & we discussed this for a while as well. Great story and theme. Freddy has a knack for all things weather related and what starts out as a hobby and a dream, turns into reality ! There's a lesson in teamwork when the town comes together that helps Freddy save the day ! The Author (Janice Dean) provides us with a book that's a great learning tool. Both educational and entertaining - the perfect mix ! Russ Cox's Illustrations are eye-popping ! 3 cheers for Freddy ! A must read for the kids and adults !
What I loved about this children's book is that it shared a meaningful lesson to all kids (both boys and girls) about believing in yourself and making the most of your talents. Just like the weather, life for kids (and adults) can often be unpredictable. But with hard work, believing in yourself and with help from others, this story will show young readers how to "weather" through own difficult times to reach their goals. It's so wonderful to see a book that both girls and boys are intrigued by, and one that sends a positive message about believing in yourself. Thanks Janice for a great first book!
I'm a huge fan of Janice Dean's energetic, informative style, so it's no surprise that her web-footed friend follows right in her footsteps. Freddy the Frogcaster teaches as he entertains, hooking young readers with his message of diligent hard work and his love of science. The glossary and illustrations make this book an ideal choice for home or the classroom. Every page is an opportunity to stop and learn. Freddy is a tremendous value that offers many teaching moments long after the initial story is read. We love it!
As an amateur climatologist (coop station reporting program with the NWS for 17 years) and a grandfather of 6, I consider this is a great children's book. It's filled with life lessons and explains weather in terms children can understand. The author did a really good job.
This book is fun and educational. It got our kids interested and they talk about it between reads. It's a lively story with lots of information on how weather works that kids can apply. Great book.
