Black & White board book is based on the simplicity of objects outlined in black & white that can be easily recognized by babies in their daily surroundings. This is one of those rare books that will interest even a newborn, since they reflexively prefer to look at high-contrast edges and patterns, especially black and white patterns. The accordion-like fold out design of the book makes it a great border for a play area. The book is sturdy enough to stand by itself and entertain the baby during "tummy time", encouraging them to pick up their head and to look up at the pictures. The size of a closed book is 6 x 6 inches. The cover closes with a handy Velcro patch to keep the book from unfolding. When opened, the book is 51 inches long. One side features 8 objects in white with a black background: a baby bottle, a balloon, a chair, buttons, a bird, a flower, a banana, and a sailboat. The other side has 6 objects in black with a white background: a fork and a spoon, a baby bib, a butterfly, a leaf, keys, and a cat. It's like having 2 books in 1 (instead of purchasing both "White on Black" and "Black on White" by Tana Hoban)!Julia ShpakAuthor of "Power of Plentiful Wisdom". Available on .
I was amazed with how captivated she was with this book! It makes diaper changes so easy because she was so happy just staring at this! I could lay her down, stand the book up in a half circle around her and she'd be happy for 20 minutes looking at all the pictures! This was definitely something I didn't think I needed so early in her life, but was glad I got it!
I noticed that my 2 week old daughter kept staring at our skylight, and when I mentioned it to my mother-in-law, she said that it was because of the contrast. Then I read in another book that very young babies see contrast best (and they also like faces).I decided to look for some sort of book or toy that I could put out for her to look at. I found this, and I'm so happy that I did!My daughter LOVES this book. When I open it for her, she just stares and stares at the pages, totally captivated. Right now she seems to prefer the black pages, with the exception of the butterfly white page. It's neat to see her take such an interest in something even though she is so young. I am curious to see whether she starts to like the white pages equally as her vision continues to develop.
My 3 month old finds this very mesmerizing. I prefer it over the traditional version because rather than sitting down to read this book to your baby it's nicer to stand it up and let them look at it for a while. It works really well for tummy time. It's nice to get 2 books in one as well - one side is Hoban's Black on White and the other is White on Black.
The book is well-made, folds and opens easily, the velcro catch is handy. The pictures, while striking, are odd choices for a baby: A bit like random graphic art silhouettes assembled together and labeled a baby book. I wish there were more baby-relatable objects, or at least objects with simpler, more recognizable silhouettes. I mean, car keys? A fork and spoon? A bib? It's hard to get excited talking to a baby about these things. Even the cat is drawn in an odd arched posture not commonly shown to a baby. The book works to show objects with eye-catching figure-ground differences to a newborn, but then you don't need fine graphic arts to do that. We've been showing our 3 month old this book since he was 2 weeks, and it peaked at about 2 months with mild interest. A style note -- This book is the polar opposite of "Look Look!" which new parents often buy with it -- that book is hyper-stylized abstract representations of menacingly grinning suns and creepy cartoon kids. But the images are at least clearly made for babies, even if their style is odd. I wish there were simple books for young babies with friendly, cute, and relatable objects.
I was told that the black and white books by Tana Hoban were good. And, after purchasing Black & White, I agree. In this book, eight pictures are shown in white with a black background. There's a baby bottle, a balloon, a chair, buttons, a bird, a flower, a banana and a sailboat. The book folds out, making it great for tummy time, and the objects shown are simple ones that a baby is sure to see (in color) around him. On the opposite side of the above pictures, when folded out, six more are shown in black with a white background. There's a fork and spoon, a baby bib, a butterfly, a leaf, keys and a cat.I own three black and white books. And, while I think Baby Animals Black and White: Black and White by Phyllis Limbacher Tildes is the best, I'm glad I bought Hoban's Black & White.
my baby loved this and would be content on the floor, gazing at this for long stretches at a time. I loved that I could stretch it out on the floor next to her, and didn't have to be right there to keep it propped up or to turn the pages!
I bought a few of these types of books and although I love things about this one it's not my son's favorite. I really like how this one stands and is great for tummy time. But it also gives him too much to look at at one time. He really doesn't need that many. When he only has 2 at a time he appreciates me turning the page a lot more. These are kind of boring photos and he's ready for me to change them much quicker than other books. It's still a great book to have and we do like it and use it. There are better ones out there for images but they don't stand like this one.
