I previewed this before I sent it to my 8-year-old granddaughter, and was pleased to see it's a pretty good little book for kids who like rocks (she collects them). Most second-graders can read the book independently if they are reading at grade level, and the pictures are fine. It is a very elementary introduction to rocks and minerals, but a good overview with the important facts and features explained. I did not give it five stars because I think that for the price I paid, it could have been somewhat larger, with even better quality photos-- that "National Geographic quality" consumers have come to expect.
I really like the National Geographic Kids publications. My daughter is so into everything nature right now and these little books satisfy her reading and learning needs so well. Every once in a while when I'm looking around on , I'll check a couple out and order one and surprise her with it. She is so excited to get her hands on a new one, she'll take it right down to her room, and I know she'll be busy for the next couple of hours reading. She reads them over and over again. They are full of great information.
This book does a nice job of explaining types of rocks, the rock cycle, and rock-related types of vocabulary in a kid-friendly, visually interesting way.
I was looking for a book for 5th graders, this book is much to easy for them. Maybe 2nd graders? There is another National Geograpic boek about rocks and minerals, maybe still too easy for 5th graders, but it was a good introduction for studying the next level of books.
Good beginning book to peak interest. Combine with gemstibe collection for gift or learning experience. This gives children outdoor exposure and heightens attention to surroundings.
I ordered this book for my 8 year old grandson who loves rocks and all things shiny. He has a nice little rock collection and I thought this book would help him identify some of those rocks.This book is 32 pages long and has very colorful pictures of the rocks and minerals being discussed. The words being used to describe them, I found to be appropriate for this age level as far as being able to understand what they were talking about. It even gives the pronunciation of some words that a child of this age group may not quite know yet. This book gives lots of FUN FACTS and has a few riddles as well. There is even a STUMP YOUR PARENTS little quiz towards the end.I rated this book 5 starts because it is a well written and we'll presented book that really focuses on the learning level of this age (6-9 yrs would be my guess). It is a LEVEL 2 reading level which is a reader going from STARTING to read, to reading INDEPENDENTLY. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for an inexpensive gift to give a young child with a wondering mind!
Great price for this little tiny book on rocks. As far as information goes it is limited as it is an easy to read book. It is below my sons reading level but it was so cheap I figured I would just throw it in for him as he is very into geology.
I bought this for my nephew's 9th birthday and he absolutely loves it. He took it to school the next day to share facts with his class.
