I am a science educator. Astronomy and space exploration are one of my areas of special focus. I recently ordered and reviewed about twenty books on this subject before donating them to area libraries. This book is the best of the best - thorough, up to date, well illustrated, and easy to read and understand without "talking down" to kids.
As a retired teacher, I have only one thing to say....where were these books when I was seven. I learn something each time my Grandson and I read the book. I like that he wants to read the book to me.
My four-year-old grandson loves this book. It has heightened his interest in the planets and space travel. Even now he's excited by the publication of the images of three highly active volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io. A Chicago boy, he has twice visited the Adler Planetarium since receiving the books and has learned a tremendous amount about planets, dwarf planets, TNO, etc. His grandmother has been taxed in trying to stay a few hours ahead of his knowledge. I could not recommend the book more, for children, parents, and grandparents!
Great book for a 4 year old boy. I learned a few things myself reading this book with him. Entertaining and educational.
My five year old is learning about the planets in school so I purchased this book as a follow up to his learning. It has enough details to make it interesting but it's not so long as to have him lose interest. The pictures are vibrant and the included facts are interesting.
I really WANT to like this book, but it just doesn't have enough content about the planet, or it's poorly arranged and presented...or something. I can't quite figure out why I don't feel that it's "great." I feel the same about the Dinosaurs book, which we ordered also. My 4 year-old's attention was lost on the first page, and she was SO EXCITED for a book about the planets.
Perfect book for my 5 year old sons that are just now getting into space and science. Lots of very interesting facts and pictures. Simple, basic language is used and it is very easy to follow along with. It pairs wonderfully with a solar system kit as a gift.
In the product description, its says suitable for 5-8. I think 5-7 would be more accurate. I bought this for my 8 year old nephew, but it is a little on the light side- i expected it to be bigger, with more pages and more info- something that an 8 year old could really get into. Its a great little book and a light entertaining read for a younger kid, but for the slightly more advanced readers at 8 years old, they will skim through this very quickly.
