I recently discovered the 'Nat Geo Kids First Book of ..' series and got them for my nephews! These are an instant hit, not just with them but with also their parents! I am myself enthralled with the quality of the book and the simple language and vivid images that jump out of the book! My 6 and 4 year old nephews love reading them out loud. There are very few immensely satisfying feelings in the world and listening to a kid read out of a book he loves is definitely one of the top 10! :)I pre-ordered this from and their price guarantee is unparalleled! A Day after the book released, it was in the hands of the tiny tots! ( LOVE Prime! )The entire set of books make a very very treasured gift set. You can't go wrong with Nat Geo! These will keep you coming back and reading them over and over again! :)
I grew up on the Pacific ocean. Choosing books about the ocean for my 3 year old son, now that we don't live by the ocean, is something that is very important to me. I want it to be realistic. I want it to educate as well as excite him and to give him a true feel for what the ocean and its animals are like. National Geographic seemed like a logical fit and it has definitely lived up to my expectations! My son knew every animal by the 2nd day we had it and now shows it to his 1 year old sister with so much enthusiasm! I adore every book I've ever gotten from National Geographic. I cannot recommend them enough.
The pictures are so colorful. My 2 Grandchildren and I learned so many new facts about the creatures that live in our ocean. I highly recommend this book to parents and grandparents. Another excellent book from National Geographic.
Excellent !!!I bought this as a complementary to the two other popular kid books of the national geographic series (first big book of animals and first big book of dinosaurs) Like the other two that is perfect to widen the nature knowledge and imagination of my kid. Pages are full of colorful photos of a wide variety of sea organisms. The cover might be misleading for those who expect an assortment of fish types. This book offers an excellent balance of fish, reptile, mammals, birds and invertebrates that either live in the ocean or on the shore. Not only that, it also categorizes them according to the ocean they live in. All oceans including the arctic ones are covered. This offers your kid a better understanding of the different ecosystems. The fascinating photos are accompanied with a paragraph or two long text that gives some useful information. Parents, do not underestimate those texts as simple info for kids. As a person that is working in biological sciences, I can not believe how much I learnt from them.At the end it has an index and some useful guidance suggestions on how parents can help their kids get the most out of the book.
Great book. My son loves it. Nice pictures, informative text. I have one complaint, though. The pages detach very easily from the binding. My son is not rough on books at all, but this is the second copy of this book he's owned and 90% of the pages have come loose from the binding. I feel like I am constantly having to tape them back in, only to have more pages fall out. In fact, I'm getting ready to order a third copy because of this (he's a bit of an ocean fanatic, so he likes having this book in is collection). I'd say it was just a fluke, but not only has it happened to the two books with this title he's owned (and I expect it to happen with the third, once he gets it), but it's also happened to both his first AND second copies of The First Big Book of Why (his second copy isn't bad enough to need replacing...yet). So, buyer beware, it's a great book context-wise, but it's very, very poorly constructed.UPDATE: My son has now had his THIRD copy of this book for four months. Ten pages have already detached from the binding and have been taped back in. I suspect more pages will be falling out soon. Great book, but I think the company needs to make sure the binding is more secure for future publishings. I'm knocking a star off my review based on construction alone.
First, my four year old grandson absolutely loves this book. There are tons of beautiful pictures. Lots of sea creatures. So why three stars? I no more than opened the book and a page fell out. Three have fallen out by now and I am returning it. I hope the next one we receive will not be defective because it is my grandson's favorite book.EDIT: Received a new copy, same problem. I am now going to glue pages back in myself because it is still my grandson's favorite book, but National Geographic has do to something about the quality of their binding. Going to two stars for poor quality.
I co-own a daycare facility with children 6 weeks to 12 years of aage. The kids love this book, I have read it dozens of times already and learned a few things along the way. I am a National Geographic geek from way back but had to sensor my Nat Geo books and magazines to show 2-12 year olds so these allow me to share the pics without the more adult content. Great pics, easy to explain to younger kids, we have even used it for our toddler class (under 2). The kids at work actually asked me to get the rest of the series and we take them out every morning to start the day.
If your child is very into fish and the ocean they will love this. I only give it four stars because my kids did not become obsessed with it like they did with the space and dinosaur books from the same series. They still enjoy it but don't devour it like they do dinos/space.
