I am thrilled to have discovered this new little chapter book series! The story involves a new snake named Owen coming to join a classroom of animals. At first he is met with caution and a little unkindness because they have never met a snake before. Through a series of events and the advice of her parents, Sophie discovers that Owen is actually kind and fun and ultimately befriends him. I loved that the parental relationship is one of respect and trust. I love that when Sophie has the opportunity, she apologizes to Owen for not reaching out before. I love that through her example, the other kids open their heart to Owen. The entire tone of the book is sweet and lovely. I also loved the whole little animal community and enjoyment of nature---the animal families in this book reminded me of the Brambly Hedge books by Jill Barklem. It's also nice to find a chapter series that is not filled with modern characters with bad attitudes. There are some good series out there, but so many are junky and mindless. This has a classic, timeless quality. I read it aloud to my 3 year old daughter and she sat through all 100 plus pages. And it's a perfect early chapter book for my 6 year old reading son who loves snakes. And there is an illustration on every page, which kept everyone engaged. Can't wait to read the rest of this series!
Yay for Sophie Mouse! I completely agree with the review written by Dallas Mom: "It's . . . nice to find a chapter series that is not filled with modern characters with bad attitudes. There are some good series out there, but so many are junky and mindless. This has a classic, timeless quality." My thoughts exactly! I just read this in 3 sittings to my 6 year old girl and 4 year old boy. It not only was a hit with the kids, but I loved the message and the positive children role models.Sophie and her friend Hattie have some reservations about the new student at school (a snake) but learn to make friends with him, in this very charming, gentle, positive, easy to read, beginning chapter book. Some of the other modern beginner chapter books have been disappointing in their characters and messages. Thank you for writing books that let our children be children. My children both asked me to order the next book in the series, so off I go . . . My only regret is that I didn't know it was a book about the first day of school; would have made a great choice for my annual back to school book gift for my daughter. Now I have to find another one. This series is definitely going into our gift repertoire for birthdays.
A fun book to read to youngsters. Just one short chapter before bedtime satisfies my three-year-old twins, but they are mesmerized by longer readings during the day. The words increase their vocabularies. The stories are fun and full of animal facts and fancy. Almost every page has illustrations and draws many comments by my eager listeners. I have used the Sophie Mouse books on planes and read at a whisper while the twins hang on each word even though they have heard the stories over and over. I believe the entire plane's crew and other passengers even love these sweet stories about Sophie Mouse. Delightful for everyone! Favorites for my twins, and their many 'readers'.
I was looking for something that would inspire my beginning of 1st grader to strive toward big girl chapter books. This was the perfect series. I have looked and looked for other chapter books at this level, but most are 2nd grade level. I am a beginner at leveled reading, but I would say these are a K or L. Seems like most other chapter series are M and above. Also, the author keeps it cute and sweet so that your 5 or 6 year old is not reading about sassy siblings (Ivy & Bean) or sassy behavior toward teachers (Junie B Jones). We have to keep them sweet as long as possible, right?! My daughter is now on the 3rd book of the series and is still interested.
Sophie Mouse lives in the forest with her parents and younger brother. She is eight years old and attends school with a variety of other young animal, including her best friend, Hattie Frog. One day, a new student comes to school. Everyone is frightened by Owen Snake because they have never met a real live snake before and they have heard stories...As a result of all the fear, the children exclude Owen from their play and socialization. At the end of the day, the poor guy goes home miserable enough for his mother to start homeschooling him. That night at dinner, Mr. and Mrs. mouse explain to their children that they should not judge others they know little or nothing about, relying only on stories. They share how as children they had a dear friend who was a snake. The next day, while picking flowers with Hattie Frog, Sophie falls into a hole and cannot get out. Hattie is so far away she can't hear Sophie's cries for help. But, Owen hears and comes to the rescue! This book is suitable for second graders to read independently, though first through third graders may also enjoy it. The illustrations are cute and well done. Best of all, the book teaches a valuable lesson!
This is a great early chapter book. The writing is extremely clear and concise. The characters are happy, positive people/animals, and entertaining. There was a clear moral and many spots to stop and ask questions about how/why the characters are acting and feeling. And other than the characters being animals, it was a very realistic school situation any kid could be in. I am happy for a book for young readers that doesn't have crazy fantasy elements. There are also enough cute pictures that kept my kids interested. I can't wait to read more!
