Our little granddaughter was preparing to be a "flower girl" at the age of 2!So reading this to her for a couple of weeks ahead of time was such a good idea -- and so helpful.We substituted the names of our own family members where we could,and ad-libbed into the book as needed.She loved it!AND she marched down that aisle with her little basket of flowerswith such purpose! It was a very exciting time -- the book was enormouslyhelpful.
Sweet Lilly is back with another adventure for her fans. This time, she's convinced she'll be the flower girl when her teacher announces he'll be marrying the school nurse.Lilly practices and practices. "It will be the biggest day of my life," she says.But when her teacher says he's already picked his niece Ginger to be the flower girl, Lilly's heart is broken. Her teacher doesn't want to let Lilly down, though, so he lets her be Ginger's assistant.Lilly's still disappointed but she takes her new role as a flower girl assistant very seriously and brags to everyone how important assistants are in a wedding. The story is an easy read for budding readers and author and illustrator Kevin Henkes took no shortcuts with his beautiful illustrations. Many pages even have multiple illustrations of Lilly in action.Lilly learns patience and teamwork during her adventure. She forms a special friendship with Ginger, the girl she envied just days before. The overall story is both a good lesson and a fun read for children.
Our granddaughter who is four is going to be a flower girl in November. She was kind of afraid of the idea. I bought her this book about Lilly who wanted to be the flower girl at her teachers wedding. It's a darling story and now Sydney is talking about walking down the isle at her cousins wedding. And seems to be looking forward to it.
My 4 year old daughter adores all of Kevin Henkes' books, especially the Lilly ones. I had to refrain from telling her that there was a new one coming out until I finally had it in my hands. I must confess, though, that even though I pre-ordered the book back in January, didn't deliver when originally promised...so the wait was a bit longer.The book is worth the wait. Splendidly illustrated it teaches a wonderful lesson in coping with something that doesn't go quite according to the way Lilly dreams it will go.I'm not sure who enjoys this book more my daughter or her mommy. It is sure to be a classic. Thanks Mr. Henkes for continuing the Lilly series.
My granddaughters love the Lilly stories. I have two granddaughters, 5 and 6 years old. The older of the two has read Lilly stories for a couple years. Lilly's escapades are memorable and understandable; easy for children to identify with. Both my granddaughters love Lilly so much they frequently ask for this grandma to take Lilly on adventures, when we are waiting at restaurants, or when we're driving in our car. Lilly is a big favorite with our whole family.
A great follow-up to Lilly's previous book. Lilly is such a unique, lovable character. Her darling teacher Mr. Slinger is getting married, and Lilly gets it in her head that she's going to be the flower girl at his wedding. Lilly is disappointed to learn this isn't the case but accepts the job as "assistant to the flower girl." Of course there's a problem at the wedding, and of course Lilly saves the day! A great story for helping kids learn how to deal with handling disappointments appropriately.
This is a great book for early elementary aged children. Lilly is one of several mice characters in a few of Kevin Henkes' books. Kevin Henkes is an amazing author...if you get the chance order and read more of his books (Wemberly Worried, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, Chester's Way, and many, many more)!!!
My family ADORES Lilly and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse has been a favorite in our house for the last three years. This book is just as good. Lilly is seriously every child- adorably egocentric- and kid's can relate to her wishes and experiences. It's a fun book for the grown-ups too!
