This coloring book has highly detailed, architectural pictures for grown-ups who still love to color. And while children might possibly enjoy this type of coloring book, the finely detailed, intricate pictures would definitely be more fully appreciated by older teens or adults.UPDATE: Apparently, coloring books for adults have come into vogue as "art therapy." Coloring is relaxing and can reduce stress. I could have told them that years ago! Keep on coloring people! 5/2015
I just purchased these Dover COloring Books for my mother and she loves them. The detail is out of this world and the variety of colors you can use are only limited by your inagination. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
I was expecting this coloring book to be full of houses similar to the one on the cover. I am in love with old gingerbread Victorian houses!Unfortunately, that was not the case. There are a few houses similar to the one on the cover, but there are more styles of houses that are not even close! I guess those houses are technically considered "Victorian," but they were not anything I'd be interested in coloring.Make sure you check out the "Look Inside!" feature before purchasing, so you know what you are getting.
Love this coloring book! It has nice clean pages with thicker than normal paper.The pictures in this coloring book are beautiful, takes you back in time while lost in your thoughts. It has lowered my husbands blood pressure just by being able to relax and color with no worries, well, except for what color to choose next lol.
This was a poor pick for me. I love Victorian architecture, having lived in both San Francisco and Eureka, CA. The presentation is nice with a description of each building. The paper quality is good, thought the pics are front and back on the page, rather than blank on one side, as preferred by myself and many other reviewers. However, I found myself feeling bound to research each one and make it as it is in real life. I've seen the Carson Mansion in Eureka. It is all dark green. Kinda boring in real life and on the page it would be boring too. The lines are so finely drawn. I just don't feel inspired to color in the pictures, though they are lovely. I'm passing this one on to our Humane Society Thrift Shop where I am sure someone will go bonkers over the find.
I was a bit disappointed in the contents of this book. Its very boring. The picture on the front is one of the best. There are too many brick/rock structures and not enough wood homes. The rock/brick pix do not have character like the wood houses.
UPDATE (Sep 12, 2016)I've just learned that Dover has published a newer edition of this under the Creative Haven line -- it's also available on . Creative Haven Victorian Houses Architecture Coloring Book (Adult Coloring). This is GREAT news!Very nice representation of the different styles of American homes from the Victorian era. Most of us are familiar with the "Queen Anne" style - the famous "painted ladies" -- but there were lots of other different styles popular during that period. Each image has a short paragraph describing the style and specific location if applicable.This is one of the "older" Dover books -- first published years ago -- and reissued recently in light of the "coloring books for adults" craze. The pictures are printed on both sides of the pages, and the paper quality isn't terrific, so beware if you plan to use markers to color these -- they WILL bleed through the page. For coloring directly in the book, I would recommend colored pencils. For markers, you'll probably want to photocopy the page onto heavier paper or light cardstock.The designs themselves are very detailed -- so bear that in mind. If you're more comfortable with "wide open spaces" to color, this probably won't work for you. I like detail, so I'm happy with this, and the images are really nicely rendered.I was hoping that Dover would re-publish this in their "Creative Haven" line -- single-sided images on perforated pages of decent quality paper -- but it hasn't happened. For the price, however, this is a good value given the number and quality of the images.
