This book is really fun. There are pictures of men and women from various countries and different social and economic backgrounds, and a good amount of detail in each drawing. If you were attempting to reconstruct the costume of a 14th century French baker's wife, for example, you could get many good ideas here! I can't stress enough what a good resource this book would be: the pictures are large and detailed, the captions clearly identify the time, place, and economic status of the persons being depicted. Just a wonderful, gorgeous book!
I met Tom Tierney many years ago. He is a pleasant and engaging fellow and more than happy to talk to aspiring artists. Here he tackles the fashions of the Medieval period with fine line drawings and brief notes. I especially like the way he depicts ALL classes of people during this period. The young, old, wealthy and peasant. If you are recreating period clothing for reenactment, stage or film, this book should be a part of your library.
I bought this as a Christmas present for my daughter, and she was thrilled with it. Not just a coloring book, it also provides a lot of historical info for each graphic. The detail is amazing. Very nice product.
I enjoyed this book. It was fun finding the colors they would have used back then, and fun sometimes using colors they never had, too! Learning how fashions were different in the old days was entertaining too.
In 48 pages, historically-gowned and garbed aristocrats, military figures, peasants, and skilled workers peer out, captioned by notes of significance. The time period is progressive from front to back, covering 19 centuries, according to the book's description. Each elaborate sketch would require colored pencils, patience, and a very steady hand to improve upon them. This coloring book is obviously for older children, as the "12 years and up" age range states on the item page. My terminally-ill mother greatly enjoyed reading her Dover Fashion, but we couldn't figure out how to actually "color" all those tiny intricate pictures. The Dover was relegated to the shelf of reference books. It's value lay in its captions and complementing visuals, not its usefulness as a coloring book.Other educational coloring books:Life in a Medieval Castle and Village Coloring Book (Dover History Coloring Book)Wild Animals Coloring Book (Dover Nature Coloring Book)Flower Fairies Alphabet Coloring BookIndian Tribes of North America Coloring Book (Dover History Coloring Book)
This coloring book has some terrific pictures of medieval fashions. SCA and Faire Folk can get some great ideas for garb here. There's no documentation for the clothing, but it's still fun to color!UPDATE: Apparently, coloring books for adults have come into vogue as "art therapy." Coloring is relaxing and can reduce stress. I could have told them that years ago! Keep on coloring people! 5/2015
I have bought this book twice. I love the drawings. Coloring the costumes inspires creativity and fantasy. And I appreciate the abundance of factual information about clothing in medieval times.Definitely my favorite coloring book. When I'm finished with this one, I'll buy it again.
I bought this and other similar books to use in teaching history, especially to my younger students. (Even the older students like them, although they don't like to admit it!) Each picture is accompanied by an in-depth description of the clothing which contains all of the obscure and archaic terms once given to items of dress and so it's usable whether or not students color the images. Very nice asset to the history classroom!
