I'm an adult who lets her inner child out daily, these days I'm into coloring but children's coloring books are neither interesting enough nor present enough of a challenge. I discovered the Dover Coloring books last week and ordered 3. I am more than happy with the Favorite Ballets, I've already colored two scenes, Emeralds and Don Quixote, each has taken more than 3 hours to finish due to the detail and types of pens and pencils I used. The drawings are beautiful and I found that many have costumes almost exactly the same as some worn by real ballet dancers in productions all over the world. The Scheherazade scene is gorgeous and I can't wait to start it. The Firebird is so beautiful, even without colors you can't stop looking at it. 30 beautiful drawings to color in and there were only about 5 that didn't appeal to me that much. Nothing wrong with them, they just didn't move me. This is a must buy for those who love ballet and coloring.
In this coloring book, choreographers and composers are named.In order to give the correct information to the children, we assume that ALL the information is , in fact, correct. However, on the Swan Lake page, the composer is listed as L.I. Ivanov not Pyotr Tchaikovsky as everyone already knows. Ivanov was a choreographer with Marius Petipa. Please ask your author to correct this in subsequent printings
My six year old daughter loves this coloring book. It has descriptions of the ballets along with detailed drawings for her to color. She has seen some of the ballet performances before and enjoys talking about them as she colors. The drawings are so detailed she prefers using sharp colored pencils to color in this book. It was definitely worth the money and would make a great gift for any dancer. Even my teen has enjoyed looking through it and reading about the ballets, and coloring a little, too.
I am an adult and bought this for myself.I wanted to have ballet prints on the wall of my home of my favorite ballets. I painted a selection from this book, matted them, put descriptive name plates below, framed them, and hung them on the wall. I used watercolors, colored pencils, and pastels - the paper was fine for all three mediums. Beautiful scenes and provides basic history.Most importantly, VERY FUN!!!
WOW!!! I will zerox pages to give to my Grandchildren so I can keep this book in tact. I am very happy to have discovered this book on because it has the synopsis of several famous ballets along with these wonderful, detailed pictures. It is a great way to interest children in the wonderful world of ballet.
I am a dance teacher in public school and you will not believe how much this helps teach the concepts of these classics to the current generation. Girls love to color and I let them do it for extra credit. I have colored them myself and laminated my faves and posted them in my studio. This gives the girls a little "eye candy" to look at when they are dancing and dreaming BIG!!!
I enjoyed coloring in this coloring book with the different ballets in it. It told a brief bit about the story of the ballet that the dancers danced in the ballet. It said when these dances were first performed as well. The only thing I didn't like was there wasn't enough pages in the book to color.
I liked this book, but returned it because I work with gel pens, and like any of the fashion books, this one requires so much of one color that you can use up an entire pen on a single page. Also, white, which is required for Swan Lake, doesn't show up well and silver is a poor substitute. Additionally, my gel pens don't have any really soft pinks, so the ballet slippers wouldn't look at all authentic in bright pink. Ditto for the necessary flesh tones. If you are using a medium other than gel pens and can figure out how to make white show up, this is a very, very attractive book with quite lovely pictures.
