Renaissance Fashions (Dover Fashion Coloring Book)

The Renaissance marked Europe's transition from medieval to modern times. Art, literature, and science flowered in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, while a vigorous trade with the Far East via newly developed sea routes enabled Italian merchants to supply a recently evolved middle class with materials and adornments for elaborately designed apparel. After careful research, illustrator Tom Tierney has portrayed this dynamic age by accurately rendering an amazing diversity of clothing styles. Forty-five finely detailed, ready-to color illustrations showing attifets, chopines, doublets, farthingales, houppelandes, and other elements of Renaissance garb depict: an Italian peasant couple dressed for their wedding day (c. 1450); an Italian knight in steel armor (c. 1460); an English lord and lady in riding outfits (c. 1510); children of a German royal family garbed in velvet and accompanied by a soberly dressed nanny (c. 1550); and many more outfits designed for various activities and occasions. In addition, seven plates feature dozens of examples of fashionable headgear, footwear, and hairstyles for men and women, from several stages in the flourishing of Renaissance styles.Descriptive captions accompany each handsome, ready-to-color illustration, making this a collection that will appeal to colorists as much as it will delight costume historians and designers.

I have a pre-teen granddaughter who loves art, history of fashion, Renaissance Fairs (for which I make her costumes) and this was a great extra Christmas gift for her. I paired it with a box of 152 crayons. Can you imagine how much fun she will have completing these pages. There are so many different fashions for the period, both for men and women. I will use the book for reference and ideas for my costume making.

5 stars this is an excellent coloring book that I have colored previously. Tom Tierney is a superb illustrator. The pictures are large and very well drawn and I found the fashions represented highly interesting.I would definitely recommend this coloring book to anyone who enjoys coloring fashions.

Yes, it's a coloring book, but one that's painstakingly researched and carefully illustrated. You can learn a lot about Renaissance garb before handing it over to your kids to color. For example, this book makes the differences between German and Italian clothing from the same period readily apparent. Not everyone cares about that sort of thing, but if you're a Renaissance nut the way I am, you'll appreciate the attention to detail.

This is one of my favorite coloring books illustrated by Tom Tierney, along with Victorian Fashions. There are only one or two figures per page, allowing for a lot of detail in the historically accurate portraits. The patterned gowns are especially fun to color, with intricate designs on the fabrics that invite all kinds of rich colors.

I enjoy the fashions but I wish the pages were one sided. hen using water colors they go through making it very hard to color the next page

I just purchased these Dover COloring Books for my mother and she loves them. The detail is out of this world and the variety of colors you can use are only limited by your inagination. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Absolutely perfect! Large pictures to color. These were colored, laminated and beheaded, used on a bulletin board with kids' faces:) Thanks. Great product!

I am an adult who enjoys coloring, both with crayons and colored pencils. This book had beautiful, colorful, costumes which allowed me to use both crayons and/or pencils. The costumes were intricate which called for the use of the pencils. I really liked the fact that in addition to coloring, the history of the Renaissance and the definitions of the different articles of clothing were discussed, so I learned something new! If you like to color, you should enjoy this book.
