This book was purchased to accompany an ant farm that I purchased for my seven year old grandson for his birthday. He was thrilled with both items and did a presentation with them for his school class and later with other classmates for their animal unit. Each child dressed as their favorite animal and presented interesting facts about their animal to parents and friends at a program. The book gave my grandson enough facts to complete his report.
Ants help keep ecosystems healthy. They are also fascinating insects in their own right. Millions of ants live around the world. They live underground, in trees, inside thorns, or in nests they build themselves. Each colony usually has a single queen with thousands of workers (always female) to gather food and take care of the larvae and pupae. Ants also provide food for other animals and aerate the earth aiding plant growth. Some ants even grow wings that allow them to fly off to start new colonies.Being a National Geographic book, the photographs in this book are gorgeous and very informative. They show ants gathering food, traveling through tunnels, and taking care of the young. The writing is appropriate for new readers with vocabulary words defined in the text in addition to the glossary at the end. The definitions in the glossary also have pictures to aid in understanding, which is a nice feature. The occasional joke adds some humor. The attractive layout makes the book easy to follow.
This little book is packed with a lot of information but is also written on a level that is great for beginning readers. I know my little insect collecting grandson will love it to go with the ant farm I ordered him. Maybe he will grow up to be like the man they mentioned in the book that is trying to find all the different species of ants. Ha!
My 4 year old son has recently shown an interest in ants. In order to encourage that interest, I ordered this book and he has thoroughly enjoyed it. We go on daily walks searching for ant mounds. In addition, he wants me to read it to him each night before bed time.
Great information for someone getting an ant farm from ! I paired it with the Fascinations Antworks Illuminated Blue farm which is awesome! The first grader grandchild was able to read this book to the 4 year old grandson. I am amazed by these creatures now --diligent workers who create works of art in their farm!!
My son loves this book. He can't get enough non-fiction. The book is not a super easy read though- it has a lot of words that aren't standard reading vocabulary- so if you have a truly beginning reader, don't be thinking he'll read it on his own. This is probably a 2nd grade reading book. Lots of great pictures!
Got my son an ant farm for his birthday and this was the perfect companion gift for it. I love the fact that it has actual pictures and plenty of facts about ants. It really helped reinforce the educational aspect of the gift and peaked his interest as well.
We recently bought my five year old an ant farm and needed a educational book on ants to go with it. This one is great! He is starting kindergarten this year and is an emerging reader and the pictures and exciting text kelp him interested. He is at a level that he can read some of the word himself as it is a Level one reader book. Very informative and fun to read!!
