If you want to inspire children to virtuous religious lives, choose positive stories. Children are too young to decide to die for their faith, and not mature enough to decide when it may be appropriate.It doesn't matter if you are Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Animist, Atheist or whatever. If children aren't old enough to decide for themselves if they should have cookies or candy for breakfast everyday, then they are not old enough to decide whether the religion taught to them by loving parents is one they should die for.In grade school, the nuns taught me a song "Faith Of Our Fathers" in which we sang how "sweet" it would be to die for our faith. Not one of us had any idea what death was; we were just singing what we were told to sing. This is not teaching a holy faith; it is programming an unholy martyrdom (and luckily, it didn't take; I don't think the nuns really wanted it to.)When you're an adult, then you can make adult decisions. Teaching children that they might want to die for their faith is a bad idea. There are many more positive books for religious children.
I was taught these same lessons as a young girl. As a result, I was convinced from ages 8 to 16 that I would die as a young woman overseas as a missionary. While I applaud international ministry, I was far too young to be dedicated to dying. When I chose at 16 to be involved in a different kind of ministry, I was so accustomed to the idea of death that I didn't know how to live. A decade later, I still feel like death is around every corner. Preparing my young mind to choose to die for my beliefs robbed me of a sense of security in the world. I urge parents - please do not encourage your children to choose death. If you have taught them well and they have a good conscience, they will be prepared to die for what is right, if necessary.
This is an amazing book! I have it on my bookshelf, right next to "Blowing one's self up for Allah!" and "Building missile encampments next to schools and Mosques for peace"What the holy heck is wrong with you people?!?
If you want to psychologically abuse and torture your young, innocent child, then this is the book for you. Teach them that there is an imaginary man in the sky that they have to do unthinkable things for in order to keep him happy, because that won't mess with their poor young minds at all. Yes, children, sometimes you must DIE FOR GOD. DIE FOR GOD OR YOU'LL GO TO HELL. I don't see anything wrong with that message, seems perfectly suitable for children to me.
Personally I don't think kids should be reading a book that teaches them its ok if people abuse you. Also, it is a farce that Christians believe they are somehow persecuted, when society has left them alone and let them walk all over those who do not believe as they do. Females should definantly not be taught Christianity or they will never become strong, self sufficient women, just doormats for guys that want to get some and leave them pregnant and alone.
