505 Pp. PB. Impr.235 Illus. & Maps. Index. A famous 5th-8th grade American history textbook written in 1940 with Catholic faith and patriotic love of country. 55 Chapters, with Study Questions & Activities. Teaches a lot in a simple manner: From Early exploration and settlement thru 20th-century developments. By the end of this book the student will be familiar with the famous persons, places, dates, and events in U.S. history and have a tremendous store of knowledge to build on when pursuing greater understanding at a more advanced level. Worth 10 times its price! A real classic! The Answer Key is available for only $10.00.
Tells the full truth about the pioneers and patriots. E.g., my very well-educated daughter-in-law, who grew up in the mid-West, did not know that many of the towns, counties, streets she knew the names of were named for men who were merely described as 'explorers' but who were actually priests. Why is this book needed, not just for homeschoolers (my duaghter-in-law was not) but especially for public and even Catholic school children? Because the religious heritage of this country is repressed in many books.
If you are a homeschooler using Laura Berquist's syllabus, you know this is a must buy book. It covers 4th and 5th grades in American History. I would recommend buying the answer key to go along with it. Pax
I am using this text plus the answer key for the first time this year with my fifth grade social studies class. It is an excellent source that makes social studies very accessible to this grade. I use Well-Trained Mind for my History pedagogy, and this book works well for the kids keeping a history binder. Every chapter review has people to know, places to know, and terms to know. There are ideas for creative activities with each chapter. The only drawback is that the language used is somewhat archaic. If a teacher doesn't mind explaining that gay means brightly-colored and negroes are African-Americans, it is an excellent text. I hope to continue to use it in future years.
This book is a must! It is inspiring as History should be.... It shows the love for Christ that those who came to the New World had to share their beautiful Catholic Faith. It's clear and engaging. Not cluttered with gobledeegook! :)
this text reads really well. It is interesting and easy to follow, and very informative. Nice for homeschooling in that it has questions at the end of the chapters, and some tests also. For older kids, you may want to fill in more details with other sources, but it works great on its own.
I bought this book to come after "The Old World and America" by the same author. I must have missed it in the description, but this book is at a way lower grade level than Old World. The writing has constant definitions interrupting the narrative, and the review questions are fewer and way easier. I will keep it for future homeschooling in case I teach this subject to a 4th grader. It is too easy for my 6th grader. The information is good and interesting, if you have a kid at the right reading level.
My 10 year old is learning a lot using this book.
