This is an exciting book for kids wanting to learn about St. Isaac Jogues, a Jesuit missionary . In this book you will travel with Pére Isaac (as he was called by the French) on his adventure sharing the Word of God with the Indians. He was born in France to a comfortable life. As a young boy he heard stories of the New World, and decided he wanted to become a missionary to the Indians. He arrived in Quebec in 1626 and served as a missionary to the Huron Indians. While traveling with them, he was captured by the fierce Iriquois and tortured and held as a prisoner. He later escaped and returned to France, but he did not wish to remain there. So he returned once again to minister to the Indians and died as a martyr. The Indians called St. Isaac "Ondessonk" meaning "bird of prey" because of his piercing eyes and quick movements. This book contains a lot of interesting facts about the Indians and their culture: such as how they made canoes, how they lived, and what they ate. This is truly a fascinating book for kids that I am sure they will enjoy.
Great adaptation that lets kids get to "know" the various missionary fathers, the horrors of life in Indian villages (without getting too graphic), and the great courage of this saint who volunteered to go back to the Iroquois knowing that he would sooner or later be put to death for the Faith.
The early French missionaries to the New World, specifically what is now Canada and the northeast U.S., were fearless spreaders of the gospel. Milton Lomask tells the story of one of the most revered: Isaac Jogues, missionary, slave, servant, martyr, and saint. Though Lomask's retelling is for youth, it's not dumbed-down; an adult may reach for the dictionary several times while reading this book. Lomask, though, does mute some of the tortures and horrors suffered by Fr. Jogues (the mutilation of his hands, for example) in deference to the age of his intended audience.Lomask artfully depicts life in the new world, Huron and Mohawk culture, and the introduction of Catholicism in a riveting story that's sure to capture the imagination of young readers.
My older boys all loved this book and so do I. Our copy is lost so I'm replacing it for our younger children!
Great story! I read it prior to handing it over to my 4th grader. I must admit, it was a page turner!
