Dwight Lyman (D.L.) Moody, born and raised in Massachusetts, was four years old when his father died unexpectedly at the age of 41. Despite having seven children, and twins born soon after the death, Betsy, D.L.’s mom, was determined to keep the family together. At the age of 10 though, D.L. had to go live and work on an old couple’s farm, thirteen miles from home. Just after his 17th birthday, D.L. had had enough of his “boring life” in Northfield and headed out to find his fortune in Boston. Would his Uncle S.S. give him a job in his shoe shop? If so, what were the conditions?April 21st, 1855 was the date of D.L.’s salvation. At 19, he moved to Chicago and got a job in another shoe store. At this time he also started evangelizing in “The Sands”, a slum area where he was able to persuade the children to come to the Sunday School. What happened when a new job came on the scene, traveling across the west selling shoes? Was he always back in Chicago on Sundays? How? As much of this was occurring during the civil war era (1861-1864) the reader will also gain some history of what was going on back then as D.L. ministered to some of the troops. Emma, his wife, was a great help to him in his ministry. What else was she good at?Why did the parents/new converts want D.L. to start a church for them? Why does Horatio Spafford, the author to the words of the very famous hymn It Is Well With My Soul, appear in this book? What was Ira Sankey's job? This is another fascinating biography by Janet and Geoff Benge. Did you know that the schools etc. in Northfield were all built and established BEFORE the Chicago Bible Institute ever came to life?! We have read nearly the entire series aloud to our children as part of our devotions. Richard and I have learned so much! Hopefully the kids have too! Enjoy reading about this important man in history. Thanks, LizDwight L. Moody 1837-1899
My son was writing an essay on one of the great Christians in history and picked D. L. Moody. This was one of the books we bought to use for information. We could have checked it out, but I thought it would be a good book to add to our home library.
This was a great inspiration...God used an uneducated man who independently read, was open to learning...never was closed in his thinking. Depended totally on God for everything...listened to the prompting of the Spirit. The book was very well written.
A great addition to anyone's library. D.L. Moody is a character I had heard about but never really looked into his life. He had a rough start in life, but once the light turned on, the apostle Paul didn't have anything on him. It is a well written biography of a man who gave his all and was greatly loved.
I really enjoyed this biography on D.L Moody. I found I have been buying several books by Moody Publishers and so I thought "hey I should really learn more about who Moody was." Great book, easy to read, really enjoyed it and would recommend. (I also read about George Muller by these same authors and it was very good too)
This is the best book series I have seen to read to kids. They are engrossed and beg for another chapter, no matter who we are reading about. We are on at least our 6th one and they(9 & 10 yr old boys)still love it! Highly recommend!!
