... you'll probably like the New York one too. She uses the same winning formula in this book with the two-sided pop-ups; one side showing the actual building, the back side giving history and other details. The object of the book is not to overwhelm the reader with spectacular paper engineering, but to provide a dizzying array of facts about everything New York. The challenge was a little greater in this book because she tried to include all five boroughs in just five spreads. Also because there are so many skyscrapers, sometimes the copy is a little hard to read. Each spread has a theme, the first one being about the financial district where we see and learn about Wall Street, Battery Park, Vertical City, The New York Trade Center, The Woolworth Building, Freedom Tower, The Brooklyn Bridge and more. Other spreads revolve around 42nd Street, The Empire State Building, Greenery and Galleries and the hated Yankees (sorry, I'm from Ohio). The reader not only gets the background on skyscrapers and bridges, but also stores, libraries, a train station, a cathedral, world famous museums, theaters, zoos, parks, hotels, a lighthouse and a stadium. Along the way we meet famous New Yorkers, from athletes, actors, poets and musicians to engineers, architects, politicians and financiers. There is something for all age groups here and I'll bet even life-long New Yorkers will learn a fact or two they'll be amazed at about their beloved Big Apple.
Back in November of last year, I reviewed a great little book about Australia and it had all kinds of facts and fantastic pop ups which I loved. So when I got “Pop Up New York”, I was super excited and couldn’t wait to check it out. This book was just as wonderful and provided all kinds of interesting facts about New York. The book can be turned upside down too for even more facts. I’ve never seen a book with pop ups that are double sided and the back sides have tons of information too. Each page asks questions that I got to find answers to also. They really make the book feel like a game. Some of my favorite pops ups are the Stanton Island Fairy which can be moved along the page and the Yankee Stadium just because it’s really neat how you can look down into it. Although I had studied New York before, I still learned plenty of new things about the state from this book. I think this is a great way to learn about states because it’s fun which makes it easier to remember what you learn. Do you know why taxis are yellow? I do and if you’d like to then you should read this book too. This is really a great book for a wide age range. Little kids would like the pop-ups and even much older children will find it helpful for learning and remembering details. I give this book five stars!Review by Young Mensan Hayden S., age 7, Southeast Michigan Mensa
Pop-up books remain a passion for my now 25-year-old daughter. It has become a Christmas tradition to gift her with a pop-up book each year. This book was not a disappointment at all! Wonderfully detailed, and wonderfully New York!
Lots of quality time has been spent looking through this book. It is filled with many many interesting facts about NYC on every page. the pictures are in great detail and the pictures have flaps to open to read. The popups are awesome and this book has become one of our favorites.
I purchased this book for my 7 1/2 year old granddaughter who was traveling to NYC this summer. I was hoping it would help familiarize her with some of the sights she and her mother would be visiting. Ms. Maizels' book is colorful and full of interesting factoids. Both my granddaughter and her parents enjoyed reading it in preparation for their trip.
Wow, what a cool pop up book for children and adult collectors. The paper engineering here is simply wonderful and there's some good information about some of the buildings and sites featured. This is a must purchase for collectors and children who love books of this type. Absolutely love it!Book provided by publisher.
Love NYC? Gotta get this! It's a fabulous pop-up of all the big sights in NYC! My wife loves pop-up books, so I try to find her new ones every year as presents. This one came highly recommended, based on reviews, and I agree 100%! The bridge is truly a work of art!
I just spent a couple of hours playing around with and having a total blast with this amazing pop-up book of New York. For a short book it is really well done and certainly a bunch of fun. I wish I had some more of these when I was a kid as nothing says fun like a pop-up book. I am going to see what my sister's Grandchildren think of it and I will post more about it then as for me I think it is awesome.
