These three books are wonderful. It is a picture book series (award-winning) aimed at 5-7 year olds. Each story is different and each inspires imagination and creativity in an enjoyable and delightfully surprising way. Ish is about a boy who loves drawing but whose brother makes fun of his drawing skills. At first the boy is depressed and gives up drawing, yet something then inspires him to get back to it, knowing that while his pictures aren't perfect, they are perfect-ish enough to continue. The Dot is about a girl who can't even draw a straight line, but her teacher slyly motivates her to give it her best shot and practice, which produces terrific results and gives the girl a chance to inspire others as well. Sky Color is about a girl (I believe it is the sister of the boy from Ish) who loves to paint but faces a challenge when she needs to paint a mural of the sky and has no blue paint. She ifnds inspiration in nature and comes up with a clever solution that her classmates marvel at. I found these all to be wonderfully written with a great message. The Dot was our favorite. If you like these books, also check out a similar book called ART by Patrick McDonnell, which we discovered a few years ago--it is great too.
This delightful trilogy has become one of my seven year old son's favorite bedtime reads and I could not be more pleased that he has embraced the message. The books are fun to read, short enough for bedtime stories, and provide wonderful inspiration to explore inner creativity and be true to yourself. Peter Reynolds books are sure to be ones he remembers fondly as an adult, and perhaps even passes on to his own children one day. I am so glad we discovered his magic!
These books are a must for kids of all ages. They teach the power of having a growth mindset and that with hard work and practice we can all accomplish anything we put effort into. I am a 4th grade teacher who spends a large portion of my first month explaining to my students that we are all capable of growing our brains and that through learning new things, making mistakes and learning from them we can accomplish anything we stick to. These books are going to be a wonderful part of this teaching.
My little artist loves these books and they teach good lessons about how much fun art is when it's NOT perfect. Our favorite in the series is "Ish," but "The Dot" and "Sky Color" also provide valuable messages about creativity and not giving up. If you like these, I also recommend "Beautiful Oops!" by Barney Saltzberg.
Every child should have these books read to them, because reading them alone does not give them the same opportunities for discussion. I've read "Ish" to several of the classes I teach and it is amazing to see how much they feel for Ramon, the main character. Nearly every child can identify with his struggle to make his art look "right" and become inspired when he finally learns art doesn't need to be perfect to be good. After reading "Ish," the complaints from the children in my classes about the inadequacy they feel over their own artistic endeavors nearly disappear. Brilliant! "The Dot" and "Sky Color" are also wonderful. My own children loved them, and I can't wait to share them with the kids I teach!
Great reminder that creativity doesn't come in cookie cutter forms and that children should explore their creativity rather that finishing ready made products! Embrace the blank paper and dare to color outside the lines of coloring pages...
I love the lessons learned in each book about expressing yourself freely and with confidence. The illustrations are beautiful, too.Note: These books are a trilogy in a more abstract sense. They're connected by theme and subtly feature the same characters.
My 6 year old daughter received this set as a Christmas present and I cannot state strongly enough how much we love all three books. "Ish" has become a frequently used term around our house. In accepting that there is no such thing as the "right" way in art and often, in life....in understanding that nothing is just one thing or one color....in knowing that there is an artist in all of us if we're willing (or tricked into) to try...the possibilities are infinite. These books remind you that it's not about coloring within the lines and in that freedom awaits beauty, confidence, and joy. Every time we read these books, I walk away with a smile on my face and the desire to pick up a paintbrush, despite having no conventional artistic talent. They inspire the reader to express themselves and that's pretty powerful stuff.
