Chester Raccoon has a problem. His younger brother Ronny plays on Chester's swings, talks to Chester's friends, and follows Chester wherever Chester goes. When Chester complains about all this, his mother explains with gentle understanding that Ronny is only doing what little brother do and gives Chester a reassuring kiss in the middle of his palm to assure him of his mother's love. The Chester sees Ronny also gets their mother a kiss on the hand. Chester is simply overwhelmed at the unfairness of it all and tears roll down his cheek. Mother Raccoon allays Chester's fears with her own special kind of wisdom and finds just the right way to let Chester know how deeply he is loved. Charmingly written by Audrey Penn and superbly illustrated by Barbara Leonard Gibson, A Pocket Full Of Kisses is a wonderful picturebook that deftly explores the feelings of young children when their families expand with siblings and they feel unsure of their new and changing rolls. Enthusiastically recommended!
As a book reviewer for Funseeker's Radio Network I come across a lot of delightful children's book, but this one has to be in the top ten. A mother raccoon has two cubs, with Chester being the older. His mother gives him a kiss in his hand, a "kissing hand" and he is delighted, until he sees her give one to his baby brother. His mother lets him know that he is loved just as much as his brother and that she has enough love for both of them. The illustrations by Barbara Leonard Gibson are some of the best I have seen and remind me of Harry, my own pet raccoon I had when I was younger. This book needs to be bought in pairs, one for the adult buying it and one or more for the children who will love the story and the message it gives.
When I first picked up this book, I was skeptical. Like most parents, I figured my 2 1/2 year old would tire of this book easily. But as I read it, the feelings of love that I have for my own two sons came to mind. I use it to teach a lesson about Love. As a mother, I never run out of kisses, hugs, affection--Love--for my two sons (or anyone else in our lives), but rather there is enough for all. I think that's a great lesson for kids to learn: that sharing is not competitive and there is room for all. I adore this book and my littlest one insists that I kiss his hand every night before he cuddles up with his bear. It's a very beautiful lesson very gracefully presented.
Had this book and used to read it to my grandchildren. My granddaughter loved it so much that she slipped it into my suitcase when my husband and I moved to Italy for three years. I used to read it to her via Skype. Thought it was a perfect gift for a friends little boy as he was getting a baby brother..
My daughter needed to read this book for class and we could not find it at the book store so we looked here and were able to download it with no issues. My daughter was able to use the book for her assignment and all is well.
My oldest daughter was an only child for three years until her younger sister was born. She sometimes feels very left out and this book was perfect to help her understand that she is loved just as much and will always hold a special place in our hearts.
A Pocket Full of Kisses is the second of six books about Chester Raccoon and his adjustments to a new sibling, sharing mama's kisses, and learning to love his brother. Chester thinks that his life has turned into one miserable mess because he has a new baby brother that his mother must spend a lot of time with. It's hard for him to share his toys and books with Ronny and especially hard for him to share his mother's love.But mama raccoon, in all of her infinite wisdom, shows Chester that sharing is part of being in a family. The most favorite thing that mama gives Chester is a Kissing Hand. She takes Chester's hand, spreads his tiny fingers, and kisses the palm of his hand. Chester is in utter joy because he can feel the love from that kiss go all the way up his arm. But then, bam, all his joy is gone when he sees his mother giving his baby brother the same Kissing Hand! Chester is devastated and big tears fall from his eyes.Mama comes to the rescue and explains that no matter how many kissing hands she gives out there will always be more for Chester. She takes his hand, spreads out his tiny fingers, and places a kiss on the palm, then tells him that that one is to put in his pocket so that he'll always have a spare. This makes Chester so happy that he runs out to play.Every older sibling usually has some pangs of doubt and jealousy about getting a new baby in the house and A Pocket Full of Kisses helps the child see that there is enough love to go around and that they will always be special to mama or papa. It's an endearing story with enchanting illustrations that's sure to appeal to small children.
Chester now has a younger brother (although in reality, these babies would have been from the same litter). When his mama gives the brother a kissing hand too, Chester is upset because that was his special link with Mama. She explains that she has enough love to share with both of them (equally) but that because Chester is older, he deserves a big brother something special...another kiss as a spare.
