Dandelion brings back such happy memories for me. I think I checked that book out of the library every Saturday as a child. It taught me that it is ok to be who I am. Kind of a childs view of "To thine own self be true". I know there are many wonderful new children's books out there. This is a classic that should not be missed, by anyone, young or old. If I had a nickel for each time my mother read this book to me--I would be a millionaire for sure--but I am richer by far in warm memories from that wonderful time. Get this book--you won't regret it.
"Come as you are," says the invitation to Jennifer Giraffe's taffy-and-tea party. But Dandelion decides to make himself over -- and to his surprise, no one is impressed. A good lesson for children (and their parents) on the nature of true friendship and genuineness, and the folly of appearing to be someone you're not. This is a terrific book. One of my daughter's favorites, not to mention to mine!
My 5 year old daughter takes this book out of the school library every week. Every once in a while we have to insist she gets something else because we're tired of reading it over and over. But it is a wonderful story with a very good lesson. I've decided to buy it so the other kids at school can have a chance to read the library copy.
I bought this for my three year old grandson. He calls it Dandy the Lion. What a great book. It is in a way like Winnie The Pooh in that it is an engaging story for both the adult and the child. Good story and good message. I'll bet we read it at least a dozen times per week. Often two or three times in a row. Try it you'll like it.
This is one of my 3 year old granddaughter's favorite books. The story is good, and the illustrations are really great. The story comes with a moral - "be yourself" - taught in an amusing way.
Okay, So I am going to go against the grain here and state that I don't think the message of this book has anything to do with "being yourself", and actually quite the opposite. I have fond memories of this book from when I was a kid, and so I bought it for my niece and read it to her... She liked it just fine, but I was less impressed. I remember this book as being about a lion and a tea party with a glamorous Giraffe. I suspect my niece got the same thing. I am giving it three stars because I don't think most kids are going to get much more than that out of it. I would not object to reading it to a kid, but I also would not buy it again and would not recommend it.Here is what adult me got: Dandelion gets an invitation to a party and goes to get his regularly scheduled Mane-cut before hand. He sees a picture in the beauty magazine and decides to curl his mane in the latest style. There is no peer pressure, and he is not trying to change himself to please anyone else. He sees something that he likes and his barber encourages him to give it a try. He likes his new mane so much that he decides a new jacket and hat would be nice to complement it. Dandelion has that "new hair cut & awesome new clothes" glow - but not for long! His hostess, the glamorous Jennifer Giraffe, not only doesn't recognize him, she is verbally rude, slams the door in his face and refuses to answer again when Dandelion re-knocks to explain. (I mean come on Jennifer, a polite guy shows up at your door, right on time for your party, all dressed up, and bearing flowers and you can't even spare a minute to find out if he was mis-directed?) Not to worry, Dandelion gets caught in a storm which removes the curls from his mane and soaks his new jacket. So he changes into his old clothes and re-tries going to the party where he is recognized immediately, scolded for being late, and regaled the story of the "ridiculous looking lion" who tried to come to the party earlier. Jennifer is rightfully embarrassed when she finds out her mistake. Dandelion learns his lesson and never tries a new style again! The message that I got out of it was "Don't experiment with new styles because your friends will reject you without further investigation." The sad thing is that there are so many ways that the end of the book could have been salvaged. For instance, Jennifer could have more clearly learned that sometimes friends will try out trends, and that we may think look silly, but underneath they are still the same person.
I purchased this sweet book for my children because I owned it when I myself was a child. I didn't remember every detail of the book, but I did remember that I loved it very much. I was happy to read this book again and even happier to find out that my children liked it as much as I did many years ago.I would suggest this book for children between 2 and 6 years of age.
This is one of my favorite books to read to my daughters. It is a nice story which reminds them to be themselves. This is an important message in the world which we live in today! I have been reading it to the girls since they were 3. My oldest daughter is 9 now and still enjoys it.
