I bought this book in a local book store after laughing so loud my son could hear me in the next room. This book is so clever, and the illustrations are very witty. Highly recommended!
To a kid it's a book about a man and a skunk chasing each other with well illustrated pictures. To the adult reader it's much more involved and quite interesting. There is no moral to the story, at least not a defined one. It's very open ended. It makes a good story book for kids as it's fun to read. But as an adult I found myself thinking about it for a while after finishing. That's quite an accomplishment for a children's book.Ultimately I think I enjoyed it more than the kid did. But I recommend it for adults.
This is so kewt!! The expressions these faces are precious!! The attitudes, the way they hold their bodies -- perfect. GREAT art by Patrick McDonnell, the author of the "Mutts" cartoons ("yesh!"), and great prose by Mac Barnett!!!I felt BAD for the skunk!! Hey, I hope he finds the guy and the guy realizes they wuz MEANT for each other!!!
I picked up this book because I am a fan of illustrator Patrick McDonnell (my mom has sent me MUTTS clippings for as long as I can remember...a happy thing to fill in her once Calvin & Hobbes clippings!.) I had only a passing knowledge of the author, Mac Barnett (Count the Monkeys is a major WIN in our house) but will now seek out his other books. THE SKUNK is clever, sweet, thoughtful, original...and really, really captivating. My two 5-yos think it is hilarious and love to remark over the surprising end. A real treat in story and visuals. I'd love a sequel!
I can't wait to use this book on some inferenceing skills. Also lets talk about theme and what lesson can we take from this book. The ending of the book just kind of ends, and I have decided that books that don't tie all the lose ends up in a neat little package make for a great discussion with whomever you are reading.
I found this children’s picture book unique. The more I looked at it, the more I enjoyed it and it was the illustrations that I loved. The story revolves around a man dressed in a black tuxedo with a red bow tie leaving his house. He discovers a skunk on his doorstep so he silently closes his door and walks away only to discover that a skunk is following him. Throughout the story, the man tries to divert himself away from the skunk, he also tries talking to him and many other options but the skunk keeps following him. It becomes like a game as the skunk is right behind the man in every situation the man attempts. The illustrations show the man’s desperation to separate himself from the animal as the story continues. The man finally breaks himself free from the skunk’s reigns but the man is not free and the story is not over. The illustrations tell the story without any attempt to read the words written on the page if that is how you would like to follow the story, the facial and movement of the characters are all you need to see to know exactly what is occurring. The gray background reflects the desperation of the man, and the skunk, he is just the skunk and what he wants…..that is a conversation starter.
My kids are 6, and we loved this book. It was simple, silly and entertaining. It left us with questions so we went back and looked back at the pictures and had fun discussing possible thoughts of the characters. It's fun to have a book that simply gets kids thinking and wondering.
Stalking, for kids! :D Actually, this is quite an entertaining book. A man in a tux finds himself being followed by a skunk. I was sure we'd find out that his tux had a white streak on its back, but no such thing occurs. The skunk just evntually disappears, and then the man begins to worry about what has happened to "his" skunk....so he starts to follow it. It's a great little punchline, and it feels like something that would happen with people. Just pure coincidence, leading to discomfort. The artwork is full of bold lines and few background details. There's not really anything waiting to be discovered on subsequent readings, but after the first reading, the enjoyment is just seeing the odd coincidence of the man and skunk following the same path.Obviously, if you have a skunk-loving child, this will be an instant hit. It would also be nice for a library storytime, since you could have it go into a game of follow-the-leader. For the individual household without a skunk fan, it needs a trial run from a library checkout.
