I purchased this book for my daughter who is going into the 7th grade and it is even better than we'd hoped.The book is full of clear, concise information written at grade level and presented in a fun, easy to use fashion. There are plenty of detailed explanations coupled with fun illustrations, graphs, and overviews.The book covers a wide variety of science and based on what was covered in my daughter's science class last year, the information lines up just about exactly.What I like most is how engaged she is with the book. She finds the information she needs easily and it is detailed but brief, much better than a questionable google search for sure. The author and designer of this book went to a lot of trouble to understand what would interest, compel and educate a modern middle schooler.This complete set is a must have for any middle school household.
I home school two boys and friends and family are always asking how I know what to teach my kids. It cracks me up, but now I can say I have a guide that tells me everything they need to know for middle school according to Common Core. We officially don't follow Common Core in Texas, but in reality the schools teach it since the kids have to take standardized tests that follow it.These guides are great! I read them to my 4th and 6th graders and then supplement with YouTube/history channel/etc videos and books with photos. It is nice to know that I am covering at least the minimum they need in case they ever have to go to public schools. God forbid. ;-)I think these books explain things well and I like the questions at the end of each chapter. These are really a great resource for homeschooling. I personally am not a fan of paying big money for curriculum, so these books are a valuable and affordable resource.
I really wanted to like this book. It's fun and packed with great information. I was even prepared to overlook its treatment of evolution. I do have a significant complaint, however. This book DOES NOT HAVE AN INDEX! This seems like a serious oversight for a quick reference book. We set out to find more information about the food chain. We only had the table of contents to help us. Ultimately, we found it by flipping through the book. When we went back to the Table of Contents, the chapter that contained the information was titled, "Interdependence and the Cycling of Energy and Matter. Really? Wouldn't an index have been a simple thing?
Going to use this as supplemental for home school. We will use it over several years getting deeper in to subjects as we go. Looks like a fab resource and will save me HOURS of time. I bought the whole set (World History, Ancient History, Science, Math and English). So did two of my fellow home school mom friends. We are all looking forward to using them as part of our curriculum.
Really great and age appropriate for middle school. It was an instant hit with my granddaughter and her friends!
