We're big fans of the "I Can Read!" paperbacks, and started to run out of new "My First" level books. I looked at the Level 1, Beginning Reading, books and happened upon these two oldie but goodie books from Syd Hoff."Danny and the Dinosaur" first came out in 1958, and was followed a year later by "Sammy the Seal". I was delighted to see them reissued as "I Can Read!" books. They are a particularly good deal because they are twice as long as the usual "I Can Read!" books, but are still available at the regular paperback price. In "Danny and the Dinosaur" a kid meets a live dinosaur at the museum and heads out into the City with him for a day of wild/mild adventure. In "Sammy the Seal" a friendly seal who's curious about life is allowed a day out of the zoo so he can wander around and explore. Both books feature kind and friendly kids, helpful adults, cheerful adventures and no drama. Is this a 50's sort of thing? Well, yes, the books do have a bit of a nostalgic rose-colored-glasses feel to them, but they aren't glaringly old-fashioned and they've actually aged awfully well. So, these are two books that you might recognize from your own childhood library, they aren't franchise or movie tie-ins, they are readable at the recommended

I had this book as a child and absolutely loved it. I was in a used bookstore the other day and found an original copy just like the one I had as a child! Now, as my husband and I start a family, I will have one wonderful classic to add to my child's collection.

This really is my toddlers all time favorite book so far. We initially borrowed it from the library. He was so upset when we had to return it. I thought he'd forget about it but he talked about it for several weeks more. So we ordered a copy. Love it!

One day, Sammy the seal decides that he wants to go outside of the zoo to see what life is like in the outside world. During his adventures he walks along a busy street, swims in a man's bathtub, and goes to school. I think it is really cute how people don't even notice there is a seal walking down the street, or if they do they don't act like it is any thing out of the ordinary. The pictures in the original 1959 version are very cute, full of expression and well colored. In the original the colors are shaded in, and almost look as if they were colored in by some very artistic kid with crayons. The story flows wonderfully, even if some parts don't quite make sense. It is a very cute, if rather nonsensical, story.Loggie-log-log-log

Listening to Sammy the Seal being read motivates preschool children to learn to read. The author allows what could never be allowed in real life to happen. Expressive characters in the story make even nonreaders love this book!

and still do. Starting to build our young reader section at home and this was a must have. Can't wait to hear our little one read this one to me. One of my childhood faves....hope it will be one of his, too.

This book a classic read that I remember reading over and over again as a child with my Mom and my Grandmother. Sammy the seal doesn't want to leave the zoo for good, but he does want to see the outside world, even if it is just for a day or afternoon. The zoo keeper tells Sammy that he will allow him to go outside the zoo to explore for one day. Sammy uses this to his full advantage and sees the city. He learns that water to sit in when you are a seal can be hard to find, that school is fun, and that even though the city is a great place to visit Sammy learns that he is very glad to live in the zoo. This is a fun book that takes kids on a short little trip with Sammy the seal to see the city and also to see that what they have is great for them, but sometimes it's nice to see and try new things too. I have read this book many times with my own son, and it never gets old to me. This is a book that I have kept from my childhood and plan to keep in my family for years to come. Cute and fun stories are hard to come by now and this is just that. The illustrations in this book are great too, simple, yet colorful and eye catching. Love it as much now as I did when I was a kid reading it!5/5 Stars!

I couldn't believe I still had the original Sammy The Seal book I had when I was a child! (This just proves how much I cherished it!) I am so delighted that I can pass it on to my 6 year old son as he learns to read. I highly recommend this book and others by Syd Hoff.
