"The Going to Bed Book" is a favorite of my little nephew. I've read it to him since he was an infant ... but he doesn't know almost any English. So you can imagine I looked forward to the Spanish version, so that I could read both to him for some bilingual cuddle time. BIG MISTAKE! This translation is one of the worst I've ever seen in terms of capturing the spirit of the original.Sure, in literal terms, the following express the same dictionary meaning:(English) "They hang their towels on the wall / and find pajamas, big and small."(Spanish, back-translated) "They hang their towels on the wall / and look for pajamas, big and little, as you can see."(Cuelgan las toallas en la pared / y buscan piyamas grandes y pequeñas, como se ve.)Gone is the rhyme. Gone is the use of small, familiar words so the child can pretend to "read" along. There's an occasional rhyme ("resquicio" / "ejercicio"), but for the most part it's a charmless and clumsy butchering of the text we loved so much.You may think it's asking too much to expect a translated version to be as good as the original. It's not. Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham is delightful in Spanish. Sandra Boynton's own Moo, Baa, La, La, La has a Spanish translation that's as precious and easy to read as you could ever want (see my review of Muú, Beee, Así Fue). It's tricky work and requires careful substitution, but it can be done if a company does what is necessary to secure a good translation. This time they didn't -- maybe next time they will.
I did read the previous reviews on the book's poor translations, yet I never imagined they would be so bad! How can publishing houses do this?? The pictures and the characters are fun, yet if you are a native Spanish Speaker, this book will hurt your eyes, and you will end up making up better translations as you go along. The pictures are fun, and the story is relevant for children as they prepared to go to bed, but other than that...I agree, you are better off buying the English language version!
The translation is so bad, that it does not sound like a children book. I was reading to my baby, and i even felt awkward while reading to her.
I really do not prefer this translation. We have this book in English and would translate to Spanish and then thought it would be better to purchase this book. However, the translation is different and not what we expected. I would prefer to read the English book and translate myself.
There aren't that many well-translated books out there, so I was very pleased to see no typos or grammatical errors in this book. Sandra Boynton's books are bright, colorful, and fun for little ones and having a good Spanish version is a place so I don't have to translate from an English as I read every night.
Terrible forced translation.As a native Spanish speaker, this translation is terribly forced, the terms used don't make sense so the essence of the book is lost. Unfortunately, a book this short that rhymes in English one cannot expect to translate well into another language and still carry out the same magic.Even with Dr Seuss's Spanish books, I learned you have to stick to books written originally in Spanish, if you're looking for them to rhyme harmoniously.Bottom line, invest your money in a Hispanic publisher instead.
My son loved this book. I recommend this to any mother's that want to reinforce Spanish at home. Very easy to follow and easy to turn the pages. My only complaint is that some of the phrases do not make sense but I correct them as I am reading to my son.
We also have this book in English, but for some reason I prefer it in Spanish. It is a good translation that flows really well. (Some of Boynton's other books do not translate well AT ALL, like "Muu, Bee, Asi Fue.") My son only politely tolerated this book in English, but he simply has no patience for it in Spanish. Especially the one page near the end that has only text and no picture. If/when we make it to that page, he takes the book out of my hand and puts it back on the shelf.Maybe when he's a little older he'll like it more. He's 15 months right now.
