Hunt seals with the Inuit; harvest corn on a cliff-top mesa; hunt the mighty buffalo; and set sail with Leif Erickson, Columbus, and all the early great explorers--Cabot, Balboa, Ponce de Leon, Cortes, Henry the Navigator, and more--in this brilliantly told story of America before it was America.About the Series:Master storyteller Joy Hakim has excited millions of young minds with the great drama of American history in her award-winning series A History of US. ...I might not have used it for nap-time!This series - The History of US - covers the history of the people of the United States. It is written in language that 8-12 year olds can easily understand. Difficult words are have accompanying pronunciations and definitions. My 8 year old daughter and I are reading this series together and out loud. She finds it fascinating and a real page turner. Unlike my history texts (in the 70's) that tended to skip and flit about through time, this series starts at 50,000 BC and goes forward to the present.Volume #1 covers the Neandertahals & Homo Sapiens, the Indians, Columbus, and the Conquistadors to approximately year 1600.I think that this would be a good series for teaching history to homeschoolers. We are certainly looking forward to Volume #2. I promise that you - the parent - will also learn quite a bit!

Although I love Hakim's series of books, and we've been using the print versions for Grade 7 for years, the digital version has much to be desired. Be forewarned--it is text-only, without any of the photographs, maps, or diagrams, and without the margin definitions and detail. It's okay for reading just the text, as it is the same as the print version, but how is any seventh grader going to get into this book when it is just page after page of unbroken text?

The information in this series of books is very detailed, well researched, and has a fun approachable tone. My only concern is that it might sometimes border on being too flippant. But the report of history is very balanced and it's always asking the reader questions and letting the reader make conclusions about open ended topics.

As a long-time home schooling mom who *loves* history (and understands the importance of having a good grasp of such) the History of US series has proven invaluable to our family . This is a very readable text, broken down into easy to grasp segments and interesting facts. My 8 year old is reading this text, as is our 11th grader-and both enjoying and learning from it. Actually, I must admit to getting lost in the text on more than one occasion myself! While not written from the christian perspective important to many, this can easily be overlooked and *discussed*-supremely important anyway! Full of wonderful pictures, thought provoking questions, fun facts, and delving fairly deep into the issues of the day, I highly recommend the whole series as a foundational part of any home schooler's history program, or just as wonderful reading for the lifetime learner adult!

My daughter and I are currently reading this book as a part of her homeschool program. I appreciate the fact that the author, Joy Hakim, has written the book in a fun way without sacrificing historical content. There are parts of the books that are written in a conversational tone and I think the book is a little more fun to read because of that. This book doesn't go into a ton of specific details, but that's okay because we can do additional research on our own. We both love the quantity and quality of the pictures, maps, and captions. There is a series of maps in the back of the book and I have found that these are useful for explaining the routes that the explorers took.

My 11 yr. old and I are enjoying this book, and learning a lot from it. It is genereal enough to hold our attention and when we want to find out more on a specific chapter, we can go to the library or online, and get more indepth information. I plan on purchasing the rest in the series.

Although this book seems to be primarily written for an elementary student, adults and teens can appreciate the authors way of weaving American history into a tale. After all this is not your normal US history text book. Want to kick start the love of history into a young person this might be the book for you.

FINALLY! Honest history! I love it. It's not biased, it's beautifully written and illustrated, and my son loves it so much he reads at least a chapter a day with no complaints. If you want your children to know the truth about the first US peoples, the different homosepian species that have gone extinct (largely taught ignorantly as our same species -'neanderthal') going back to the Ice Age, that Christopher Columbus was not the first to sail to the US and in fact did so on accident, and so many other awesome fascinating truths that are either left out or skewed for the public system's 'in a box' texts, buy this series. He'll be reading at least 4 of the 10-book series this year.
