I got this for my soon-to-be 9 year old for Christmas. We've been doing the Highlights Hidden Pictures for years & he loves them! This summer, I started noticing that the "regular ones" were getting less challenging for him so I thought this would be great. Unfortunately, without a visual "clue" as to what you're looking for, you're left to wonder exactly what kind of ring or nail or bird or hat, etc. you're looking for, which proved to be very frustrating. The book is a good quality, the paper is a heavier stock, and there are a lot of puzzles included, but I doubt this will become a go-to book the way some of the other hidden picture books were.
My mom and I loved doing the Highlights hidden pictures when I was a kid. She mentioned getting a book so I gave her this one for Christmas. I ended up buying a few more, because they are a lot of fun. They bring back childhood memories. The drawings must be from the 70s and 80s because they look like the ones from back then. Or they are inspired by it.You can also color in the pages when you're done finding the objects. I use colored pencils. The books are kind of expensive, so I actually might not color in the others and keep them blank in case we want to re-use them later.
My son likes the challenge but it took a bit to adjust to reading the description of the items to find instead of seeing a picture. For example the word bell is on the search list, instead of a picture of what the bell looks like. Took a bit for him to get used to the change, but he now likes it.
I actually love these books, but this book only has the words to the pictures you are supposed to find. It makes it a little harder for my 5 year old to find the pictures as he cannot always read the words. He loves to do them and we do at least one picture a night. It is good quality time that we spend together. I will of coarse order more books like this, I will just make sure they have the pictures in them for him to look at and find. These books are fun for both children and adults. Many times my little man can find these silly things before I can. It's neat to work on their reading skills while making it fun for everyone.
My whole family is hooked. Some of the hidden pictures are very hard to find because items don't look like you'd think they would look and there are no pictures to show you what you are looking for. But, we still enjoy looking and eventually finding!
Truth be told I am far from a child however due to medical reasons I was homebound & needed something to entertain, challenge & have a purpose. I am so addicted to these books, I can't live w/out them. When I find the plcture I color it in w/a pencil.
It is a wonderful gift for children because it is fun and enjoyable to color with out it being electronic. My daughters, nephews and nieces always enjoyed Hidden Pictures 40 years ago. It also encourages children to look for shapes in nature, clouds and shadows.
My twins loved the last one of these books of the hidden pictures. I decided to get them this one which does not have the picture legend and only word descriptions. Definitely harder. I think they still like it but would rather have the pictures. Be sure your kids is a pretty good reader.
