After taking her children to visit Shakespeare’s house, E. Nesbit – one of the greatest of children’s novelists – was faced with a conundrum:   “I can’t understand a word of it,” said Iris.    “And you said it was so beautiful,” Rosamund added, reproachfully. “What does it all mean?”   “Yes,” Iris went on, “you said it was a fairy tale, and we’ve read three pages, and there’s nothing about fairies, not even a dwarf, or a fairy god mother.”   “And what does ‘misgraffed’ mean?”   “and ‘vantage,’ and ‘austerity,’ and ‘belike,’ and ‘edict,’ and—“ “stop, stop,” I cried; I will tell you the story.”   And she did, eventually publishing her retellings of 20 of Shakespeare’s plays, of which we have included ten. We have selected for each play images from such great illustrators as Walter Crane, Charles Folkard, Lewis Rhead, Charles Robinson W. Heath Robinson, and Hugh Thomson and, of course, Arthur Rackham. Though less well known than Charles and Mary Lamb’s Tales from Shakespeare, E. Nesbit’s retellings of these plays are concise and straightforward, yet retain the magic of the Bard’s language. The Green Tiger’s Illustrated Shakespeare will make a delightful introduction to this essential body of literature.

Edith Nesbit paraphrased Shakespeare for kids quite a long time ago, but she's still more interesting to read than Lamb's Tales of Shakespeare. The pictures here are all old illustrations of Shakespeare's stories from various illustrators, which makes some of them better than others. As a librarian I would definitely want this for my library, but I also know that it will appeal to a very rare student. There have been many versions published in the past few years which will be more accessible, notably ones by Adam McKeown. Still, this is a beautiful volume that feels so satisfying to open! Green Tiger Press (part of The Laughing Elephant) specializes in pairing vintage illustrations with great books.

Beautiful compilation of pictures. The plays (very abridged) are well-written and perfect for either older children or children who will be read to in case they need just a little bit of help re. some archaic terminology (not much). Still, it's not hard to understand and I think it offers a more realistic introduction to the feel of Shakespeare. Very nice.

Excellent book ...delivered promptly! Lovely abridged versions of the original plays, well illustrated, a perfect "Bard Primer" for young people.

Great for the children.

Great introduction to Shakespeare for children eight years old and older,. I am relearning all I forgot back in my days. many years ago, in English high school and college classes!
