The much awaited second volume to Slaight and Sharrar's Great Scenes and Monologues for Children expands the compelling dramatic material available for young actors ages 7 to 14. The selections - taken from both contemporary and classic plays, myths and legends, and fairy tales - offer a wide variety of styles and themes to challenge children and their teachers and directors. Among the playwrights represented are Timothy Mason, Y York, Steven Dietz, Paul Zindel, Louis Sachar, Suzan Zedar, Contance Congdon, Lynne Alvarez, Alan Ayckbourn, Sarah Daniels, Christina Reid, Naomi Wallace, and Wole Soyinka to name only a few. Of particular interest, the collection features scenes and monologues from plays developed by the internationally renowned Young Conservartory at American Conservatory Theater (where Slaight and Sharrar are in residence) and London's Royal National Theatre.

I have volume one of this book and have used a few of the scenes for classes I have taught and was looking forward to having more material to chose from. Unfortunately I could not find one scene in volume two to use. Most of the scenes were too lengthy to use for classroom use and were also too long to present to a child as young as 7 or 8 to memorize. A few of the scenes had characters that were adults and therefore were not in fact good choices for a young child to play. Most of my students are female and it seemed a bulk of the material is this book were parts for males. Overall this was not a worthwhile purchase for me.

This book has a lot of great scenes but mostly for boys. However, my 2 girls, 11 and 13, have fun adapting them. Not as good as volume I due to insufficient scenes for girl.

This book has really good scenes and monologues for both young girls and boys. The boy monologues are all dramatic (and somewhat sad). It would have been nice to have at least one comedic monologue for young boys. Still it was one of the best monologue books I bought for my son to use for auditions.

While the selection is good -and it's great to have books for kids that come from actual scripts, and not written by a single author, I wish there were more monologues.
