"Stories on Stage" is a collection of reader's theater scripts for young readers, adapted from stories by fifteen different authors, including Louis Sachar, Nancy Farmer, Russell Hoban, Wanda Gag, and Roald Dahl. Coming from such genres as humor, fantasy, and multicultural folktales, stories were selected for their dramatic quality, literary value, and appeal to young people. With a focus on ages 8 to 15, the collection features a wide range of reading levels. The scripts in this collection are  -- "Three Sideways Stories From Wayside School," by Louis Sachar -- "Mr. Twit's Revenge," by Roald Dahl -- "Millions of Cats," by Wanda Gag -- "Tapiwa's Uncle," by Nancy Farmer -- "How Tom Beat Captain Najork," by Russell Hoban -- "Harriet," by Florence Parry Heide -- "Mr. Bim's Bamboo," by Carol Farley -- "Talk," by Harold Courlander -- "The Jade Stone," by Caryn Yacowitz -- "The Bean Boy," by Monica Shannon -- "The Kid from the Commercial," by Stephen Manes -- "The Fools of Chelm," by Steve Sanfield -- "Mouse Woman and the Snails," by Christie Harris -- "Westwoods," by Eleanor Farjeon -- "The Legend of Lightning Larry," by Aaron Shepard. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// Aaron Shepard is the award-winning author of numerous children's books and magazine stories, as well as three books on reader's theater, "Stories on Stage," "Folktales on Stage," and "Readers on Stage." Aaron Shepard will get you started with his stellar scripts -- perfect for duplicating, handing out to your students, and bringing to life. This is one must-have book." -- Judy Freeman, Author, More Books Kids Will Sit Still For "One of the challenges of teaching is instilling in our students a love for reading. By transforming imaginative stories by some of our favorite authors into clever scripts, Aaron Shepard once again provides the means for teachers to nurture a passion for the written word. This book is formatted so easily, it took me MUCH less time than I thought it would to prepare a unit on reader's theatre for my class. I used it for my high school theatre class so they wouldn't have to concentrate on large vocabularies, but rather to deliver the story in a simple, easy way. It was a HUGE success of a project and this book made it possible. It tells you how long each story is, what cast you'll need, and what reading level it is!! Yay!!!The stories themselves are entertaining (even for high school!!!), compelling, and really fun to work with. I am SO grateful I ordered this!

I purchased this book after realizing that my 8th grade, special education classroom of reluctant readers shared an affinity for reading plays. I was very pleased with the outcome, and they were too. I used this book in my 7th grade class as well, and a paraprofessional I work with actually inquired about this book to use with her eight-year old son and his friends. I simply photo-copied the plays and had the students pre-read and highlight their portions. After reading a play 3-4 times, I started to notice an improvement in my struggling readers' reading fluency and overall confidence. Even with my more proficient readers, they were able to truly shine and practice changing their voices and intonations as necessary. I highly recommend this book for teachers.

Each play has a preview that includes genre, culture, theme, number of readers required, reader ages, length of play and roles. There are also helpful notes and placement of readers suggested.I downloaded this free on Kindle which is great to get an idea of what the content is like BUT very impractical to use for actually doing the plays. If you purchase the paperback edition you are able to make multiple copies so way more practical.

Aaron Shepard is a generous contributor to the field of Reader's Theatre. This book is no exception. It's well-laid out and chock-full of interesting scripts. I've recommended to several folks interested in RT.

This book was written in clear language. It was helpful to me as a novice.

I read aloud to the kids every night. I bought these on a whim when I was looking for another book from Louis Sachar. Since I got it on Kindle, all the kids downloaded it to their devices and we each take a part and read together. The kids love it. The plays are child appropriate and fun to read.

We read the story version of most of these plays that are in the book. It is great when teaching students about genre. They get to see a story in many forms. My goal is to get the poetic version of "Louis Sachar's Sideways Stories" and I will have all three versions. Students will be able to understand the story in every presentable genre form. Great book for that use. And just fun to do with your class.

Most of the plays in this book are great. There is a wide assortment of plays - some I recommend, and others I don't.
