In the last of his eight volumes of decade-by-decade 20th-century fashion-design paper dolls, Tom Tierney shows, if sketchily, how varied fashion continued to be. Though his preface mentions "retro," "grunge," "minimalist," and "military," the outfits shown here (30 of them for two dolls) are pretty mainstream, while at the same time spanning the gamut from barely-there miniskirts (Todd Oldham's 1991 patchwork-plaid suit) to throat-to-ankles coverups (Geoffrey Beene's 1990 silk jacquard evening ensemble), from a tailored suit (Isaac Mizrahi's, 1997) with a neckline plunging almost to the navel and slinky tube dresses (Bill Blass, 1993, and Donna Karan, 1996) to a gown (Nina Ricci's, 1994) that looks like something out of the 1860's, from a mannish pinstripe suit (Linda Allard, 1993) to a fantastical showgirl-style gown (Jean-Paul Gaultier, 1999) with a Sally Rand ostrich-feather fan. It was a volatile decade in design, and even with his space limitations Tierney makes that plain. This is a sound finish-up to the sequence.
I've admired Tom Tierney's work for years, so I bought this book to complete my collection of his "Great Fashion Designs of ..." series.Unfortunately, it was not among his best works. The dolls were not particularly well drawn (one had a huge forehead). The selection of outfits did not represent the best designs of the decade, nor the best work of the designers included. There were a number of pieces from labels which were not influential during the era (Adolfo, Nina Ricci, Arnold Scaasi, Bob Mackie, etc). Also, some designers were represented by dresses which were not the best examples of their respective styles (Versace, Gaultier, Alexander McQueen for Givenchy). One of the few highlights was a beaded cloak by Galliano for Dior. The detail and color of this illustration were superb.
LOL This is part of the "history of fashion" collection of paper dolls. This stuff is still in my closet!
Very helpful for teaching fashion history to my fashion classes.
