This paper doll set was purchased by me for my collection, and it has definitely filled it's purpose. I enjoyed it immensely, and even my sister liked it. We both found it in great likeness to the movie, "Shakespeare In Love" and although that's a bit far fetched, it was a great set anyway. The costumes are very well researched and were a delight for me to have.

The illustrations in this book once again demonstrate Tom Tieney's knack for making complicated historical costumes understandable and accessible. Most of these beautifully detailed costumes are taken from famous portraits. Mr. Tierney always gets the lines and important details correct. There is some amazing and subtle detail in the brocades and lace fabrics shown, and it could not have been an easy job to render or print. Excellent reference for dolls or historical costume.

In so-called Elizabethan dress (1558-1603), fashion attained its most extreme expression to date, and Tom Tierney in his liner notes explains how the natural shape of the queen and her subjects' attempts to copy (and thereby flatter) her made this happen. As usual he gives us a young noble couple, who model the farthingales, doublets, ruffs, trunk hose, elaborate dress armor, restrictive corseting (worn by men and women alike), and broad-toed shoes of the era. As with the other volumes in this series, it's important to remember that clothing of this degree of elaboration would be worn only by the wealthy, but the general shape and style would be fairly universal. Be sure to use Tierney's Queen Elizabeth I Paper Doll (Dover Royal Paper Dolls) and Mary Queen of Scots Paper Dolls (which are about the same height) along with it.
