My daughter completed the first book at 8 and this second book at 9. Everything that made the first book a success returns in the second book - colourful illustrations, child-friendly pages, progressive learning through the playing of tunes, etc. However, this book is much more of a leap forward than book one so it will be a bit more work - different hand positions, more chords, simple sharps and flats. You will probably go through it at a slower pace so your child doesn't feel overwhelmed. It will take two to three times longer than book one. By the end, though, they will be ready for Book Two or Three of the Hal Leonard series. I recommend this latter series because like the Usborne books they are child friendly and full of colourful illustrations. You can also purchase all kinds of supplements to go with the Hal Leonard series - extra exercises, books of solos, stickers, etc. If you complete the Usborne Piano Book Two and move on to the Hal Leonard series (which comprises five books for children), by the completion of the Hal Leonard books your girl or boy will be well (and relatively painlessly) along the road to mastering the piano. At that point they will be at the level of Grade 4 in the Royal Conservatory of Music program. Not that you have to use the RCM program. But it's nice to know how far your child has come. I've been teaching my daughter how to play the piano with the Usborne Piano Course Book 1 that we acquired from a used book sale and it has worked great for us. Halfway through the book I thought I'd better begin looking for another book and found book 2, though it is now well out of print. I ended up purchasing it used and it has just as great as the first book. Her piano playing has improved quite a bit using these materials. A great choice if you can still get your hands on a copy.
This book uses British music terms, so you may have a little translating to do when you switch to an American authored book, but the series is fun and it's a good place to start. I've had three students now who wanted to learn on their own rather than having formal lessons. I had no problem picking up where these books left off when they were ready for more outside instruction. Also a great resource for parents who are NOT musical and want to understand what their children are learning.
