I love this series for studying the orchestra. The "characters" are instruments, and they are well-described as to their looks and sounds.Pages 1-16 of my book are printed correctly. Pages 17-32 of my book actually belong to the "Brass Family on Parade" book by the same author, and vice-versa. That book has pages 17-32 of this book. It's no problem because I have both books, and it's kind of fun for my family of good-natured boys. Just wanted to point it out.

I'm a music teacher, and I bought this book, along with 2 others in the series, to help me teach each instrument family to my students. The book has really great factual information in it! It gives each instrument a name (like Bella or Max) and a personality that matches its timbre/tone color (which is a really smart way of describing timbre to little ones!). It talks about the technical aspects of each instrument; relative size, materials, mechanisms, how it's played, all in a very accessible way. There's even an index, glossary, and reference website in the back. The one thing I'm not crazy about is the illustrations. They depict each instrument as having a head and arms so they can play themselves...which doesn't make a lot of sense, and because of that, they never really talk about the instrumentalist's position when playing (i.e. standing for double bass, between the knees for cello, etc.)I would recommend this book mostly for 2nd or 3rd graders, maybe 1st and 4th graders.

This is a great book to use in the music classroom. My students love learning about instruments that make beautiful music!
