On the one hand, I'm really excited to find some curriculum workbooks that relate to my child's primary interest, yet I find myself appalled by the first couple of sentences of the first chapter. "No one knows for sure when music began, but the historical record shows that it has been part of mankind's existence at since at least 1000 B.C. If the Bible is used as a historical document, then music has existed since at least 4,000 B.C." I assume those are technically accurate statements ("if" allowing for doubt) but they leave a totally wrong impression, one that we don't have good evidence that music existed long before 4,000 B.C. and two that we can use the Bible as a historically accurate document. Quoting from Wikipedia, "Prehistoric music": "In 2008, archaeologists discovered a bone flute in the Hohle Fels cave near Ulm, Germany. The five-holed flute has a V-shaped mouthpiece and is made from a vulture wing bone. The researchers involved in the discovery officially published their findings in the journal Nature in June 2009. It is one of several similar instruments found in the area, which date to at least 35,000 years ago, making this one of the oldest confirmed find of any musical instruments in history." We have possible other musical instruments that date before that. So, yes, at least 4,000 B.C., because 35,000 years ago is a heck of lot longer ago that 4,000 B.C., not because of what the Bible says. So now I feel I have to pre-read this whole book and the others in the series for other stupidity.
