If you have very young students (four or five year olds), this book progresses very slowly and might be helpful. It's colorful and is attractive to young children. The problem is it shows incorrect pictures of how to hold the instrument and bow. When I use this with children, I put a big X over those pictures. I wish this book showed correct positions -- if it did, I would rate it higher. On the up side, I don't know of another book that progresses this slowly.

For the last few years I have used the Progressive Violin Method books, both 1 and 2, for my youngest beginning students. I have found these books to be a good introduction to a very difficult instrument. The scores are simple and in large print, the introductions of each new concept is generally well paced. My technical complaints is that above each measure is a chord symbol, and these are completely unnecessary and very confusing to young students. What happens is that the youngster thinks the chord name is the name of the note in the score (even after one explains that it's not). I do continue to use this book, however I have the chore of whiting-out the chord names prior to lessons. The reason for my one-star review is very serious, and pertains to this book as well as many other children's books in piano and guitar, which I also teach. I'm ashamed of publishers for allowing it: Most all of the illustrations depict Caucasian children, and a few that are vaguely Asian. Seldom are African American children depicted, and this is, in my opinion, despicable. My African American students are polite about this, as are their parents. We actually color some of the pink children brown, with great delight! The Progressive Young Beginner violin books also feature primarily girls. It's not rocket science to write an all-inclusive book when it comes to simple illustrations, is it??!!! Come on, artists, this is the 21st century.

The audio CD is very helpful. However, the teacher said the hand position illustrated in the book is wrong.

The CD ROM came with this book is great. The violin acompanied by piano is beautiful and it really encourages my daughter to play. It is great for beginners.

A useful book for young beginners. It is a short lesson.

Time will tell how good it is
