I love this series for studying the orchestra. The "characters" are instruments, and they are well-described as to their looks and sounds.Pages 1-16 of my book are printed correctly. Pages 17-32 of my book actually belong to the "String Family in Harmony!" book by the same author, and vice-versa. That book has pages 17-32 of this book. It's no problem because I have both books, and it's kind of fun for my family of good-natured boys. Just wanted to point it out.
I'm a music teacher, and I bought this book, along with 2 others in the series, to help me teach each instrument family to my students.The book has really great factual information in it! It gives each instrument a name (like Slim or Max) and a personality that matches its timbre/tone color (which is a really smart way of describing timbre to little ones!). It talks about the technical aspects of each instrument; relative size, materials, mechanisms, how it's played, all in a very accessible way. There's even an index, glossary, and reference website in the back.The one thing I'm not crazy about is the illustrations. They depict each instrument as having a head and arms so they can play themselves...which doesn't make a lot of sense.I would recommend this book mostly for 2nd or 3rd graders, maybe 1st and 4th graders.
This is a great book to use in the music classroom. My students love learning about instruments that make beautiful music!
